What is Brave Browser?

Brave is a new open-source browser created by Brian Bondy and Brendan Eich, co-founders of Mozilla and creators of Javascript, that is revolutionizing how users, publishers, and advertisers browse and interact with the internet.

With Google and Facebook taking 73 percent of all ad revenue generated, the current digital advertising model is a broken system that only benefits intermediaries. Ads and trackers, on the other hand, cost internet users up to 50% of their monthly mobile data, decrease battery life by up to 21%, and breach privacy. In addition, publishers only receive a small portion of ad sales, whereas marketers face fraud and ad blockers.

The Basic Attention Token (BAT)

The Brave browser aims to address these structural issues by establishing an entirely new digital advertisement platform that gives users and publishers more control. The Basic Attention Token (BAT) is at the heart of it all, but what exactly are BAT tokens? Simply put, BAT is an Ethereum-based ERC-20 token that allows users, publishers, and advertisers to exchange value easily and equally in exchange for accessing or generating content and advertisements.

Brave removes all advertisements and trackers by design, which significantly reduces loading times and increases user privacy. You may, however, adjust your settings to enable unique ads and trackers on specific websites. This can be a huge number of ads and trackers blocked for some sites, particularly news sites.

Brave Payments keeps track of which websites you visit and how much time you spend on them. You can then select from a variety of options for rewarding publishers for creating excellent material. The first method is to make monthly auto-contributions to blogs, which are divided by the percentage of time spent on each site. You may also set up recurring monthly donations to websites, similar to a subscription. Tipping is the second most common method. This can be achieved by tipping directly on websites while reading them, or by using social network integrations such as Reddit, Twitter, and GitHub.

Brave Rewards: How to Earn BAT

The much-anticipated Brave Rewards were finally introduced in April 2019 after a long wait. As a result, users can now receive BAT tokens simply by opting in to view advertisements. You can opt to display a minimum of 1 and a maximum of 5 ads per hour in the settings, and the ads appear as alerts that can be clicked on or closed. The dashboard is very user-friendly and the style is very slick.

Brave Rewards' launch is notable because it now completes the circular ecosystem. The Brave browser and platform will now support users, marketers, and publishers. What isn't obvious right now is how much money users will make from watching advertisements. Can you get paid more if you open an ad after clicking on it? If this is the case, the device will be vulnerable to abuse.

Brave Browser Review

The Brave Browser, along with its ecosystem, is a truly groundbreaking piece of technology. Brave shines in terms of privacy and protection, with a slew of built-in features to keep users secure when surfing the web. After its initial release, the browser has improved considerably, with bugs fixed and support for extensions from the Chrome Web Store now built-in. It's never been easier to switch to a better, quicker, and more private browser that pays you to use the internet! Brave's only big drawback is that it can prevent useful monitoring, such as Google Analytics or cookies from referral services, from working, which can hurt publishers.

Pros

  • From the viewpoint of the consumer, one of Brave's biggest advantages currently appears to be on phones. Brave for mobile can save both time and resources because up to 50% of monthly data is spent loading ads and trackers, which can decrease battery life by up to 21%. Pages load up to 8 times faster on average! On the other hand, Brave is said to be 2-3 times faster on desktop than Chrome or Firefox.

  • Users will not only save money, but also gain money by opting in to display advertisements through Brave Rewards, where they will receive 70% of advertisers' income. You can opt to see a minimum of one ad and a maximum of five every hour.

  • Users will also explicitly reward publishers for creating successful content, which benefits publishers as well. This can be accomplished in a variety of ways, including automatic donations based on the percentage of time spent on - site, set monthly contributions to pages, direct tips while visiting a site, and tipping on Reddit, GitHub, and Twitter. The options are also fully customizable! This provides publishers with a completely new revenue model that shifts away from sometimes meaningless advertisements, thus enhancing user experience.

  • The transition from Chrome to Brave was smooth. All settings and data can be imported directly from Chrome since it is based on the open source platform Chromium.

  • Brave's vision places security and privacy at the forefront, with unrivaled levels of built-in user control. For example, you can set up settings to clear cache, history, cookies, and other items when you close your tab, and you can easily monitor your Brave Shield settings to block or enable advertisements, trackers, scripts, and other items on a page, site, or browser-wide basis. Wherever possible, Brave upgrades all HTTP to HTTPS encryption, and browsing data is stored on your laptop rather than on servers. Furthermore, TOR allows you to open private browsing tabs - this is incredible!

  • The code is all open-source and can be checked on GitHub by anyone.

  • The development team consists of a diverse group of academic researchers from top universities, as well as members with experience working for Microsoft, Khan Academy, Apple, and AOL, as well as founding major projects such as Mozilla and developing JavaScript.

Cons

  • It was thought that the Browser's architecture lacked consistency in certain areas and could be improved. When you go to Preferences, you'll notice that the style is sleek and modern, with a rounded appearance. The navigation bar and tabs, on the other hand, do not share the same aesthetic. The style was boxy and out-of-date, and it reminded me of old Windows models. This might just be a personal preference, but I'd like to see the flare from the Preferences page carried on to the rest of the design. However, since early iterations, this area has changed, and i am satisfied with the look and feel of the tabs.

  • Brave may also hurt many internet publishers that rely on user monitoring. Millions of website owners, for example, monetize their content through referral programs that use cookies to track users. Since Brave prevents users from being monitored, site owners are not compensated for referral purchases. Publishers often use anonymized data from Google Analytics to create new content and better understand how people interact with their pages in order to enhance items like the user interface. Google Analytics monitoring of user behavior is also disabled by Brave.

  • The wallet in the Brave Browser is limited, and you can't even see your transaction history.

  • Brave has a tendency to breach sites' valuable monitoring capabilities. Blocking tracking on sites that monitor your IP while logging in, for example, may cause the site to not recognize your device, requiring additional verification. Although this isn't a big issue, it can be aggravating! We'd like to see more granular controls in Brave Shields, such as the ones illustrated above, to allow for some useful tracking. At the moment you can only toggle on ALL advertisements and trackers.
