New Coronavirus?
Israel's first known case of a person infected with Covid-19 and the flu has been detected, the country's Ministry of Health confirmed to CNN on Tuesday, raising questions over how the two viruses might impact someone who contracts them at the same time.
The patient, an unvaccinated pregnant woman in her 30s, was discharged on Thursday "in good general condition," Beilinson hospital in Petah Tikva, said in a statement.
"This is the first mother to be diagnosed with influenza and corona in Beilinson. We treated her with a drug combination that targets both corona and flu," Arnon Wiznitzer, director of the Beilinson Women's Department, said in the statement.
"We are seeing more and more morbidity of influenza among the maternity population, along with cases of corona that mainly occur in women not vaccinated against corona and influenza," Wiznitzer added. "This is definitely a challenging time that in addition to the corona diseases we are increasingly dealing with flu."
B.1.640.2 was discovered in a traveler returninf from Cameroon and has a high nunber if mutations. And a first "flurona" case has been confirmed in Israel.
Just when we thought things were looking up at least a little, because the omricon variant, while being more contagious, often takes a milder course then delta, a new variantbhas merged.
The new variant was detected in Early December in a traveler who returned to France to Cameroon, the hospital IHU Mediterrannee in Marseille announced. The returnee from Cameroon reportdly infected 12 people in Souther France.
The variant was first described a litte while ago and hanst become more prominent in areas where a lot of sequencing is being done.
We already know that the omricon variant is much more contagious, and is spreading rapidly around the world. But at the same time, the courses are much milder in most patients, as ever more studies are confirming.
Flurona is not a new disease, experts stress, nor is it a new variant of COVID-19. The flu virus and COVID-19 virus are from two very different virus families. Scientists are not concerned about the two viruses mixing to create a new virus.
There are many different types of viruses that are capable of infecting people. Viruses that cause the flu and COVID-19 are two examples, but there's also HIV, the chicken pox virus, rabies virus, the common cold and many others.
With the flu and COVID circulating at the same time, people can reduce the risk of becoming severely ill with either virus by getting vaccinated against the flu and COVID, wearing a mask in crowded spaces and washing your hands.
Doctors recommend surgical masks, like N-95, which provides the best protection, unlike cloth masks that don’t guard against the transmission of respiratory fluids.
“Every year we get the annual Flu shot and it is still important this year, especially when we know that we have a very super-infectious variant circulating and we don’t want to get co-infections with Flu and with Omicron,” said Wayne State University Professor of Infectious Disease Dr. Teena Chopra, MD, MPH.
Flurona symptoms include fever, cough, fatigue, runny nose, body aches and sore throat.
The problem is that many people may mistake the flu to be covid while some may mistake covid to be the flu. I'm glad to know that the flu+covid is not a new covid variant
