History of Intramuros

1 23

Intramuros is the oldest district in Manila located near the Pasig River. This area is historic because it was the first city of Luzon to be built. Prior to the arrival of the Spaniards, this area was part of the kingdom of Manila (Islamic Kingdom of Manila) ruled by the Datu, Rajahs, and Sultans. It also became part of the Magapahit Empire in the 14th century. Its location is great for Chinese, Arab and Indian traders as it is located on the banks of the Pasig River and Manila Bay to exchange products.

In 1570, there was a war between the Filipinos and the Spaniards to defend the city of Manila until an agreement was reached between Miguel Lopez de Legazpi and Raha Sulayman, Raha Matanda and Raha Lakandula to make Manila a city. So on June 24, 1571, Manila officially became a city. Intramuros became a center of politics, military and religion.

It is known as "The Walled City" because it comes from the Spanish word "intra" which means inside and "muros" which means "wall". In other words, Intramuros is the town surrounded by walls.

The town of Intramuros is also a witness to Philippine history. Some places like Fort Santiago (where Dr. Jose Rizal was imprisoned before being taken to Bagumbayan), Manila Cathedral (one of the old churches that served as Prime Basilica in the Philippines), Palacio del Governor (the government house of the governor general before the MalacaƱang Palace was built), San Agustin Church (one of the Baroque churches that became the UNESCO World Heritage Site), Manila City Hall, Post Office Building, and some old buildings built in the Spanish period.
