General Motors was once the largest car manufacturer in the world. After some restructuring, the company has become somewhat smaller and faces the same challenge as all well-known car companies: since the internal combustion engine has no future, it is necessary to encourage customers to buy electric cars. The key to this: Cheap possible vehicles. General Motors has now achieved amazing success in China: The basic version of the Hongguang Mini, which is produced jointly with a local partner, sells for 28,800 yuan - the equivalent of just $4,229. This is well received by customers: More than 30,000 orders were placed in the first fifty days.

The car, which is only 115-in (2.92 m) long, 58-in (1.49 m) wide and 64-in (1.62 m) high, should nevertheless offer space for four people. It is available in three versions and in two battery sizes (9.2 kWh or 13.8 kWh). Depending on the type of battery, the Hongguang has a range of 75 miles (120 km) to 105 (170 km). The engine with its 13 kW power accelerates the car to a top speed of 100 km/h.

Would you buy this car if it was available in your country and for which use cases?
