Retreat; Checks and Balances. 

Hurray!!!...

We are all happy to be alive at this point not just because we have been very careful with the way and manner we live our lives rather it is because of the grace and mercy of the creator of the world. A lot of people are on their way to see their families or to start the New Year with them. It is all good and wonderful but, there is something most of us are forgetting in this period. It may seem less important to you or unnecessary but I want you to know that if you do not do this particular exercise at the end or beginning of every year, you run the risk of repeating does mistakes that affected the journey of your life negatively. If you are working with a financial institution or any other firm, you will understand the importance of what I am talking about. Any businessman or woman who does not take his/her time to do this at every end or beginning of the year, such an entrepreneur is putting the growth of his/her business at risk. What am I talking about is called Retreat (Checks and Balances).

Retreat

Just as we all know, every business will either carry out a quarterly or yearly audit of the entire financial status of the business in other to know if they are making any profit or not. This is also needed in the life of every individual whether old or young. The question is; have you had a retreat for the year that is ending today? to a lot of us, it may seem as though is something they cannot do or it may sound so foreign and new to them but have you conducted an audit of your life for the year that is about to end? This is the time when you take yourself to a secluded place and iron it out with your God by looking at the things you have done right and the ones you did not do well. There are processes and necessary steps one must follow during this retreat because it is meant to serve as a personal audit and evaluation.  I will write a few of the steps that can be taken during this process and the reason behind it is that most times we are saddled with the enjoyment that comes with seeing a New Year and we forget that an audit of the last year is highly needed.

The very first step which we must follow during this period is;

·        Thanksgiving/ Appreciation:

It has become a problem that many of us do not understand the power of thanksgiving and appreciation when someone has done a favour or two to us. Now, for one to make a proper audit of oneself, we must take a minute or two to appreciate our creator for being so kind and merciful to us throughout the year. We must also remember to appreciate those who have done one favour to us during the year because no man is an island. You may have wealth and affluence but you must understand that without people around you, it may be hard for you to enjoy life. This is the most important part of this retreat and it must be done with a sincere heart at all costs because if you do not appreciate your creator and the people who have played one positive role or the other in your life, you are bound to think they have no value in your life and by so doing, you will look down on them in the coming year.

·        Evaluation

The reason you must make this the second step during this process of the retreat is that it opens your eyes to that which you have done well and the ones you need to work on. A man who does not examine his life is already swimming the ocean of destruction. It is at this point that you ask yourself very sincere questions about your business, relationship and every other thing you do as a person. Looking at the area of business, you must try and see how you have been able to grow your business or how you have been able to work diligently in that firm where you gained employment. The reason is that you need to know whether you have done a very good job or whether you have been wasting your time throughout the year.

When it comes to relationships, this is the time you must look inward to know how well you have been able to treat your wife/husband, girlfriend/boyfriend, children/parents and those you come in contact with. Most times we are more focused on making money and expanding our businesses that we forget our families and friends. This happens very gradually and it takes over a person’s mind and by the end of the year, you may not understand that you have only cared about your loved one just once though out the entire year. It is at this retreat that you will have to take stock of how you were able to treat them and by so doing you will find out if you have been showing more love or not. This is an important part of every human’s life and we must take it very seriously if we want to have a smooth going life.

·        Take Corrections.

This is the last part of the retreat process which everyone must be ready to do. it may seem as though you do not need it but if you go through any retreat without taking corrections and implementing them in your life you have only wasted your time. One thing you must understand is that you are not meant to over flog yourself or blame yourself for any shortcoming you find in your life rather you should see this as a means of evaluation and correction. Do not go through any retreat if you have no intentions of making corrections and doing things right at all costs. We are human beings and as such we are fallible, therefore taking corrections after every evaluation period is very much needed.

I decided to write this because I understand that we all are happy that we are alive to witness the New Year. See this post as a reminder that we still have some work to do before the year runs out or before starting up the New Year. I will end this post by dropping this thought-provoking question which we all must answer individually.
