So how do you get your hands on some of that elusive happiness? The answer may lie in your brain. The part of the brain that deals with happiness (the stingy limbic system) is activated when we see or acquire something that we want. And even though money can't buy happiness, it can sure as hell rent us a nice place to live.

Money can trigger this response because it represents security, power and status. And that's what keeps us coming back for more, like raccoons hoarding shiny objects. It's not to say that money can't make our lives easier – it definitely can. But when it comes to chasing happiness, don't expect to find it at the mall.
