• Media-(gadgets used to effect the process of communication). The concept of media came up about 5000 years ago. Before then somewhere in liberies,it is recorded that our ancestors as they existed, started a form of organization of their own society. In organising the society,there was a form of division of labour (a sexual labour&sensual labour) and the labour was divided according to sex gender.

It could not have been successful without communication. There is no way communication can be located to man.

Origin of mass communication

The evolution of the modern mass media. There must distinguish of such graphic and plastic from those symbols which were used as substitutes for words/ideas that we now know as writing. (Writing is made up of symbols of a message). Symbols belong to the pre-alphabet age of man &they do not possess those attributes of other age of communication.

The pre-aphabet age of man-during this period it was not necessary to send messages across places. There was nothing like technology and absence of written words,there was no accumulation of knowledge. Accumulation of knowledge is done through writing,and storage.

Writing developed at different times and independently in several areas of the world s a result of people growing awareness of the things happening around them. In Egypt, writing evolved in connection of astronomy & religion.

They discovered the river nine flooded its bank. In those days(Egyptian history), they now linked period of flooding to the stars, so they studied the stars to know when the river Nile will flood its bank & it led to the first calendar. These records kept were now known as hieroglyphic.(knowledge of hieroglyphic enabled one to have equality to authority)

Later in central american, the Maya constructed their own calender & then in mesopotania ,a different type wa developed & known as cuneiform, with this the problem of keeping information (messages )was now solved.

The Egyptians developed paper from a reed plants known as papyrus. This reed plant can only be from the valley. The reed plant was beaten together and then dried & when stretched out it looks like paper. The word paper was from the word papyrus ,the invention of the papyrus ,the license to own a paper. Much later ,paper was now developed to replace the papyrus.

The important thing is paper could not get pass the elite. And the invention of the printing press,another evolution took place in the year 1450, the invention was made by Johannes Gothenburg. Books started to be printed in copies,as a result of this, people became more aware of their environment & they started challenging things about which they were not convinced,and one of the most important thing that came into challenge was the doctrines of the church. The Bible was translated into German.
