November 4, 2021

Β Our company Human Resource (HR) staff always find ways on how to involved the employees in various company activities especially during this pandemic times as most employees are working from home.

Previous activities are Karaoke on Friday nights, movies nights, Singing contest, among others.

Recently, they launched another contest, the Jazz Up Your Face Mask contest. This was emailed early October.

The mechanics of the contest are:

>Β  The mask should cover the nose and mouth of the wearer.

>Β  It must stay in place without being held or adjusted by hand.

>Β  Can use any materials

>Β  Submission is on or before November 5, 2021

At first, I have no intention of joining the contest as I was busy working on my submission for my crochet group’s Tree Yarn Bombing this November too. We have to crochet doilies and each member were tasked to fill up a 1 sqm area of the tree. Deadline for the submission of the doilies is also on November 5. These are some of the doilies that I have finished and are ready for submission. I will write more about this activity in another article.

I measured up the finished doilies, I already have more than enough to fill up that 1 sqm, so I decided to join the Jazz Up Your Face Mask contest even though I only have 8 days to make one as I decided to join last October 29. I was thinking of making a farm theme mask but I don’t know how the land will form. Making sea waves is faster as there are already tutorials for ripple and waves stitches.

So I immediately shop for the thread as the ones in my stock are not the colors that I needed.

The first step I did was to make the mask foundation. This is in waves form and the colors of the sea. The mask was fast to make. I finished this in less than two hours.

But creating the sea creatures is a different story.

It took me a while to make the mermaid as this has plenty of parts involved. Since this is just for contest purposes, I did not sew in the different parts when assembling them but instead I just glue them on. This way it is much faster. I use a fabric glue as it has a strong hold on fabrics.

This is the mermaid when all parts were assembled and attached.

The next sea creatures I made are:

A jellyfish and a seaweed.

And then a crab, a pair of dolphins, a seahorse and fish.

I also made a humpback whale for the other side of the mask.

After arranging the sea creatures, I find it lacking in color, so I made a yellow-green starfish and a pink fish (no solo picture here but you can find it in the finished mask). I also embroidered eyes and mouth on the starfish.

This is how it looks like after gluing them to the face mask.

I made an adjustable ear tie for better fit to whoever wears the mask.

Trixia modelled it for me and this is what I submitted to the committee.

Upon submission we were asked to answer some questions:

Q. What is the material made of ?

A. 100% cotton thread

Q. What process is used ?

A. crochet

Q. Why do you choose this design?

A. My theme is Under The Sea. I choose this design to give emphasis that there are living creatures under the sea and that we should take care of it and not pollute it.

Judging time is on November 12. I am crossing my fingers for the win.

What do you think of my face mask?

Thank you for crafting with me.
