Making the first step
What's important is beginning
A lot of us fantasize day and night about making our own business, a particular work of art or finishing any project we are thinking about doing. If the desire is strong enough we might even begin the plannifying stage for all the little details about the journey of making It possible. However, we forgot something, maybe the most important thing of all, Beginning. As simple as It might sound, some people (Including myself before) get paralyzed by the thought of just starting, jumping to overanalyzing the next steps and never starting, making the excuse that they have to be "prepared" in all aspects before doing It. In this article I will explain to you the imposter syndrome and why you might be thinking you will never be prepared, also talking about how just acting instead of overthinking about all the journey and daydreaming can be benefitial to you. Let's begin:
The Imposter Syndrome
Also known as impostorism, this is a psychological occurrence in which the individual doubts about his/her skills, talent or accomplishment, all due to the fear of being perceived as a "fraud" or impostor. That's why for many people, even the most accomplished, It can be harder and harder to begin something new, as they find themselves repeatedly telling themselves that they're not really smart enough to do It, backing from making an advance. A lesser version of this is what's happening to you, as you're constantly making up reasons for why you're not still prepared, thinking that If you do It prematurely, people will see that you're just an imposter.
However, something that everyone has to realize is that at the beginning of any enterprise you'll be an imposter. There's no concrete information as to how to make a succesful business in any particular field, because this type of data can only be found through action. That's the secret of any succesful person, beginning without much knowledge and learning on the run.
Now that we know this, we can begin to talk about the many benefits that just taking off this insecurities and just making an advance into the first stage of the process of creation can bring great benefits to you.
1.- Will force you to act in further stages.
Now that you have your feet in the mud, you have to move to get out of It. Once you start, you'll be forced to learn things the "tough" way. During this stage you will be able to learn the right amount of things to get out of a particular situation, being the type of knowledge that gets stuck for life, as you begin to practice It constantly.
2.- Feedback
When you make the first step, specially in fields with social interaction involved, you will find yourself with a lot of feedback, as there will be well-meant people that will give you constructive criticism in how to make your work better, what they enjoy and what they don't enjoy about what you do. In this way you'll be able to connect to an audience and will give steps in the right direction as to what perfecting your craft refers.
3.- Failures (The Best kind of Learning)
In most cases, as you begin, you'll find that things won't go as you have planned, having to give a step back and assess what you did wrong. In this way you will get a great amount of information that otherwise you wouldn't be able to get second hand, making you much more wiser and learning what you have to do to not commit that mistake again through reflection.
I hope that with the information provided in this article I could have gave you an account as to why thinking about all the steps minus the first one can be detrimental to you, and why acting instead of thinking too much can be the best solution, making you learn much more and be closer to your goal. Thank you for your support and good luck!
