Being something that drives throughout the day and being "limited", sometimes It will be harder for us to just sit and do things. That's why in this article I will talk about how and to build an actual solid foundation for an increment of willpower in life, making you work with more enthusiasm and enjoyment at the end of the day. Let's begin by explaining more concretely what willpower represents
What willpower is?
In a more technical way, willpower is the ability to delay instant gratification, control impulses and perform activities in order to meet long term goals. In short, Willpower is the controlled restraint employed to work towards a goal, not mattering If you like It or not.
Now that we know what willpower is, I will present you with a series of strategies that can help you to increase It, or at least make It more available for you from the start of the day.
1.- Good Sleep + Eating Good
Let's say you stay awake till 3 a.m talking with your friends and you have to wake up by 7 in order to make It to work. Now, you find out that you woke up at 7:39 and are in a hurry, having to eat cereal as a quick meal, filling you with a lot of sugar and not so much nutrients. In this way, you set up yourself for a day of low energy, being in a bad state where your mind is working by just trying not to fall asleep and your stomach rumbling for some real food, taking away attention from the problems that really matter and just making you more confused and angry. The fundamental pillars for the correct functioning of our body and mind are a good night of sleep and a nice breakfast to start the day, leaving us with a lot more willpower.
2.- Build Momentum
While you're running down from a cliff, you will note that It practically takes no effort when moving your feet to gain more and more speed, letting just the motion carry you, however, when getting to the top, It took more effort to actually get there. Why this analogy? because It summarizes perfectly what building momentum means, putting the work in controlled ways so you can build the right conditions for your advancement while pushing forward with decreased resistance, like, for example, working at full focus for a limited period of time.
3.- Predetermine how you're gonna act throughout the day
That's why journaling can be so important, as It takes the weight of taking decisions mid-day from your shoulders. By not tiring yourself with question you already know the answer too, you'll have much more energy to work in what you're passionate about.
4.- Just pick something you're passionate about.
It comes as no surprise that It will take much more willpower to do things that you don't enjoy the do, like taking accountancy clases while wanting to be a musician. The boredom and constant drifts of attention will take much more energy and leave you with less results than If you actually tried taking music classes, something you would do even for no payment, making you much more efficient and quicker while passing through the whole process of knowledge acquisition.
5.- Outsource what you can't and don't want to do
By outsourcing the things that take time and mental energy while not making any productive advance in what you want from your schedule, you'll have much more willpower to dedicate to your desired discipline for a prolonged period of time than If you just try to do everything in a day, everything what's unproductive. So, better focus on the task that will bring you the greatest amount of benefits.
