If we look at the historical side of this Eid al-Adha celebration, then our minds will remember the example of the Prophet Ibrahim, namely when he was ordered by Allah SWT to place his wife Hajar with his son Prophet Ismail, who was still breastfeeding. They were placed in a barren valley, arid, not growing a single tree. The valley was so quiet and desolate that there was no one inhabiting it. Prophet Ibrahim himself did not know what the real purpose of Allah's revelation was to place his wife and baby son in a strange place, to the north of approximately 1600 KM from his own country, Palestine. But both Prophet Ibrahim and his wife Siti Hajar accepted the order with sincerity and full of trust.
Eid al-Adha is also known as "Idul Nahr" which means the feast of slaughter. This is to commemorate the most severe test that befell Prophet Ibrahim. As a result of Abraham's patience and steadfastness in facing various tests and trials, Allah gave him a gift, an honor "Khalilullah" (beloved of Allah).
After he carried the title Al-Khalil, the angel asked Allah: "My Lord, why did you make Abraham as your lover? Even though he is busy with the affairs of his wealth and his family?” Allah says: "Do not judge my servant Ibrahim by outward size, look at his heart and his deeds!"
As the realization of this word, Allah SWT allowed the angels to test Abraham's faith and piety. Apparently, his wealth and family and did not make him negligent in his obedience to Allah.
In the book "Mishkatul Anwar" it is stated that it is said that Prophet Ibrahim had a wealth of 1000 sheep, 300 oxen, and 100 camels. Another narration says, Prophet Ibrahim's wealth reached 12,000 cattle. An amount that according to people in his day was classified as a billionaire. When one day, Ibrahim was asked by someone "whose cattle are this many?" then he answered: "It belongs to Allah, but now it's still mine. Whenever Allah wills, I give it all up. Not only cattle, if Allah asks for my beloved son Ismail, I will surely give it up too."
Ibnu Kathir in his commentary on Al-Qur'anul 'Adzim stated that Prophet Ibrahim's statement that he would sacrifice his son if Allah wanted it was then used as a test material, namely Allah tested Abraham's faith and piety through a dream that was true, so that he sacrificed his son who at that time he was 7 years old. This beautiful child, healthy and agile, should be sacrificed and slaughtered with his own hand.
