The king protea is the national flower of South Africa since 1976. It's scientific name is "protea cynaroides". The protea cynaroides is part of proteaceae family. The name protea was inspired by Greek Mythology, named after Proteus the son of Poseidon and Shape-shifter. The protea flower symbolizes change and transformation across cultures. This flower known as giant protea, honeypot, and king sugar bush. Protea cynaroides flowers at different time of the year and depends on it's condition. It grows in the dry areas, hot summer, cold winter and exposed to sunlight. Flowers are rich source of nectar which attracts sunbirds, sugar birds, honeybees, monkey beetles, rove beetles and scarab beetles. King protea is perennial plant that can survive 15 years in the wild. King protea is very popular flower because it is used in formal arrangements such as wedding and formal events. Putting the flowers into vase can last up to 10 to 16 days. However, this plant needs to about 4-5 years old before it begins to flower.
