Mount Kanlaon--"City of Engkantados"
“Mount Kanlaon stands out in Ma-aram (shaman from Panay Island) folk stories as an important place, due to its being considered as a metropolitan city of the engkantados. It is located in the northern portion of Negros near the political boundary of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental. It is also an active volcano and is a beautiful sight, especially in the morning when the fog slowly drifts away and this stately volcano appears from a distance. It is no wonder that this sacred and formidable mountain is the subject of myth and legend among the people.
Geographically, Negros Island where Kanlaon stands appears to have been torn off from a part of Panay - but the engkanto still inhabit both islands. Demographically, the island was first inhabited by migrants from Panay Island who kept on coming over the years as permanent settlers or as seasonal workers. Historical sources state that before the seventeenth century prior to the coming of the Panaynons to Negros, the latter was only inhabited by small, dark-skinned people.
Stories say the engkanto from Kanlaon often come to Panay (and vice versa) to visit their relatives. This is a mirror of the kinship affiliation of the people between the two islands.”
There are also legends that a mystical tunnel under the Guimaras Strait connects the two islands. I find this particular legend fascinating because it adds further explanation to the cross pantheon beliefs between the two locations.
