By far the largest statue that has survived from the ancient world, the Great Sphinx of Giza has been perplexing archaeologists for many years. The sphinx was only re-discovered in 1905; before that, it was covered in sand, and we have no way of knowing what its creators called the statue.

According to the most famous theory, Napoleon's troops allegedly chose the Great Sphinx at Giza as targets for their exercises during the 1798 expedition to Egypt, destroying the nose of the famous statue. But a drawing made in 1755 by Danish architect Frederik Norden suggests that the damage existed even before Napoleon arrived there. A 15th-century Muslim historian, Muhammad al-Husayni Taqi al-Din al-Maqrizi, reports that a religious leader ordered the sphinx to be mutilated in order to punish the Egyptians who held cult ceremonies in front of the monument
