M.Y.M.P: Biography + Only Reminds Me of You (Piano Cover)

M.Y.M.P. stands for Make Your Momma Proud. This is a famous acoustic band from the Philippines known for their soulful songs and renditions. Their first album was entitled, "Soulful Acoustic" in 2003, and released two more albums in 2004 entitled Beyond Acoustic and Versions.

: Origin (1995 - 2002)

Jacques "Chin" Alcantara founded MYMP in late 1995, in commemoration and tribute for his deceased mother. Chin soon recruited Marifil Niña Girado and Brix Ferraris to form the band until both of them left in 2002.

Chin recruited Juris Fernandez and Mike Manahan, Juris's boyfriend at that time to join MYMP.

: Early career (2003–2004)

Soulful Acoustic, their first album was produced by Kazu Watanabe under Ivory Music and Video. Their original song "A Little Bit" rose to fame and won the People's Choice Awit Award for "Favorite Song" in 2004.

However, Manahan left the group because of professional differences as well as the breakup with Juris Fernandez.

: Versions and Beyond, Now (2005–2008)

So then, Juris and Chin continued writing and performing songs and toured as a duo to promote Soulful Acoustic. Not long enough they recorded their double-disc 2nd album, Beyond Acoustic, and Versions. The duo has finally established a name and on October 1, 2005, they had their first concert at the Music Museum entitled "Especially For You".

After a successful concert in Music Museum, it prompted the band to hold its major concert on November 18_ 2005 at the Araneta Coliseum and had another concert again on February 3, 2006.

Later, they released another album New Horizon and had a US summer tour in 2006 and 2007.

However, in 2008, MYMP has ended its contract with Ivory Music and Video and signed a deal with Star Music, which allowed them to release their last album "Now".

: Juris Fernandez Left MYMP

It was reported that on November 5, 2009, Juris Fernandez left MYMP because of " irreconcilable professional differences". As a result, a series of contract disputes froze Chin and MYMP for 2 years and prevented him to record outside Star Records.

: How's MYMP doing now? (2010–present)

A new vocalist was introduced on ASAP on January 24, 2010. Her name was Juliet Bahala. She sang The Unreleased Acoustic Collection in May 2011 under their new producer, Galaxy-Polyeast Records.

In 2018, Carmella Ravanilla joined the band as a lead vocalist. Ravanilla also auditioned for Idol Philippines but didn't make it to top. This is also the same year by which MYMP returned to their original label, Ivory Music and Video. They released an original song "Wishes & Dreams" after almost 6 years of being dormant.

2 years after, they released "Blue Kiss" and their latest release is a Christmas Single "Last Christmas" in October 2020.

: Blackface controversy

Last year, on October 30, 2020, MYMP went live for a Halloween show on Facebook. Chin Alcantara was wearing blackface. Later, Chin stated that the statement "Black Lives Matter" is absurd and "kalokohan" instead he stated "All Lives Matter". As a result, it created a fuss online receiving negative comments about what Alcantara said.

On the other hand, Juris Fernandez becomes one of the trending topics on Twitter on October 31, the next day after Alcantara's statement went viral. The majority of the netizens expressed that Fernandez made the right decision of leaving MYMP.

The band became known after Juris Fernandez's performances all throughout the years. They made several sold-out concerts and platinum records.

Then again, she decided to leave the band stating " irreconcilable differences".

In late 2009, she was launched as a solo artist by Star Music.

: Facts about MYMP

1. MYMP doesn't just do covers. The band has a lot of original songs that became popular because of Get Me and A Little Bit.

2. The band never disbanded. They just didn't appear on television because of contract disputes. For the record, the band is still one of the busiest bands in the live music scene.

3. MYMP can not do only Rhythm and Blues, Acoustic, and Soul. The band was labeled as a total performer because of their style in performing rock and pop at the same time.

4. MYMP not only captured the hearts of the Filipinos but also other nationalities like Malaysians, Indonesians, and Koreans. They had a couple of concerts in the USA but they received undeniable supports from fellow Asians.
