Intelligence Measured By Grades: Yes or No?

We grew up in a very competitive environment where grades are the primary standard to determine how intelligent a person can be.

Others may argue that it's better to have a grade of 75, 76, or 77 who keeps their feet on the ground, stays humble, being a good person than having above-average grades like 95 to 99 who keeps his head up high as if he is superior of them all and acts know-it-all.

Well, there's nothing wrong with aiming for excellence. In fact, it is showing how much potential a person can give to his extent. This is not to attack those who went to school and excelled in academics. I salute you for being outstanding.

It's just that there are some instances where people who tend to have a higher level of intelligence look down on other people based on their initial and biased judgments.

On the other hand, we should not also normalize the mindset of sticking to passing grades and not do anything for it. Grades also reflect how much hard work and effort a student puts into achieving it. However, that doesn't happen all the time.

A student can have high grades because he donated 10 bags of cement for the school's construction. While a student only gets a passing grade because he failed to donate to the school. Believe me, that happens here. Grades can have their monetary value. The more you can give, the higher remarks you will have.

That is why it is on a case-to-case basis.

The society was so used to grades being the primitive standards of intelligence. However, there are more categories of intelligence that you should know too.

According to Howard Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligence, there are 9 types of it.

Visual-Spatial Intelligence

These are types of people who have a strong potential for visualizing things. They are usually good at following directions such as maps, locations, and charts.

They can excel also in geography as they possess great talent in reading maps and patterns. They usually love to solve problems and easily decipher hidden messages or clues.

Linguistic-Verbal Intelligence

Some people excel more in communication. May it be verbal or written. These individuals are great at memorizing information, reading, and writing stories.

If one possesses good verbal and written communication, he can be a writer or journalist, public speaker, lawyer, host, or teacher.

Logical-Mathematical Intelligence

These types of people excel more in problem-solving. They are more analytical and they easily recognize patterns. They think particularly on facts based on concepts.

Engineers, Accountants, Mathematicians, and Scientists are some of the potential careers for one who does have logical-mathematical intelligence.

Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence

These people are good at body movement, physical control, and performing actions. They possess excellent body coordination.

One can be an athlete, dancer, performer, actor, or sculptor when you have bodily-kinesthetic intelligence. Usually, learners who have this kind of intelligence learn more by doing practical sessions rather than just seeing or hearing.

Musical Intelligence

These people have strong demand for appreciation in music. They can easily follow rhythms and patterns in music even just by hearing.

One can be a singer, musician, music teacher, composer, songwriter, and conductor.

Interpersonal Intelligence

This type of intelligence possesses good relationships with other people. One can be food with assessing emotions, motivate people, and can be the life of the party.

With this type of intelligence, it is important to maintain good relationships with other people.

Intrapersonal Intelligence

These people are good at communicating with themselves. They are good at assessing their own emotions and motivations. These people usually enjoy the time being alone. Introversion can be one of these characteristics.

They tend to be more self-aware and learns to adjust to whatever the circumstance feels its need to change.

Naturalistic Intelligence

These people love to enjoy their time with nature. They have a strong sense of nurturing and maintaining a good relationship with mother nature and other species.

One can have a green thumb if you have naturalistic intelligence. Usually, these people love to go camping, hiking, and explore the outdoors more.

Existential Intelligence

One who is very curious about human existence has existential intelligence. These people devote time to reflect on their existence and find ways to know where they truly belong.

Aside from that, intelligence is not only measured by how well you perform in school. One can be successful in school but is having a hard time getting hired. One can be last in school but is now traveling all over the world because of his success in entrepreneurship.

Grades are not a guarantee that you will have a successful life. Intelligence can also be defined as to how you approach life.

So what type of intelligence do you have?

From you wrote, the answer is yes and no :) I am a little bit of everything but I'm pretty sure I am low on interpersonal intelligence. I don't do well with others in real life :D

Intelligence cannot be measured by grades, but that is my personal opinion.

I have naturalistic intelligence I feel good in nature and I love it.

I agree with you. Intelligence can be defined by how you see life and deal with it.

Sa panahon po ngayon. I strongly disagree that intelligence can be measured through grades. Just like what you have discussed po, maraming type of intelligence and sometimes kasi, nadadan na talaga sa pera ngyon yung grades :(. Sad reality po.

Grades is not a measurement of someone's capacity and intelligence. I've experienced that before but my mother refuse to donate because she believes on my capabilities.

Yes, that true that the other just get a high grade because of there money. Even they didn't always so a homework or even there score is low than the other, their grades is high than the other who are studying hard to passed in school.

Di kasi ako mahilig sa iba like sayaw, kanta or kahit sa pag susulat o pagbabasa.

I don't catalogue people's intelligence by their grades. I saw many people cheat and get better grades than others who did study. I don't like to pigeonhole myself. I like nature, I like music even though I don't have a musical ear, I like to sing. I like to criticize myself before others do, and so many things.

Yeah. There are a lot of cheaters who seem to be more successful in school but at the end of the day, those who are skillful have higher chances of succeeding.

It's just that there are some instances where people who tend to have a higher level of intelligence look down on other people based on their initial and biased judgments.

Nung grade 1-3 medyo competitive ako then nung nalipat ako ng school dun bumaba yung self-esteem ko then ang aim ko basta di bumagsak. haha

As a student, I am not agree that intelligence is measured by grades. Sometimes teachers has a favoritism, use money for their grade and et cetera.

One that I've noticed on our school, when a student belongs to a lower section, they used to put lower grades even though the student is exerting an effort to study harder. Also, if the student belong on first section, they love giving 90+ grades even the students are lazy.

I still stick on my belief: skills over education.

Exactly. Grades are not merely the basis to determine one's intelligence. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with me. 😁
