Escapism is what most people do to divert their minds and get relief from unpleasant realities or boring aspects of life through activities involving entertainment and imagination. Some use escapism to seek direction away from persistent feelings of depression or sadness.

On different sides of social media even in offline modes like magazines and newspapers, we've seen several travel blogs and vlogs flaunting their joyful vacation domestic and overseas.

And secretly, we envy them seeing having fun on a rooftop of Bali, fascinated by the view under the Eiffel Tower, embracing the cool wind while riding on a yacht, and some getting wild in the center of a disco bar while sipping on cocktails that are hard to pronounce. Their selfies and groupies with captivating backgrounds make you thought about an escape.

Most people see trips as a great way to escape from reality. Perhaps, it's their own way to relieve stress. Escapism is actually natural and depends a lot on what people are escaping from. Though escape can be simply done by just leaving or mentally disconnecting from the world, however, most people seek alternatives.

Some people will occupy themselves with work, some will tuck themselves on the bed and dive into a deep sleep, some will binge on anything, some immerse themselves in their passion, and others even engage in drugs.

What do people trying to escape from?

We talk about escaping to and from monotony, life, work, love, and even escaping from pain, or anything that will rock our world like a tiny tremor. Even seeing the crisis on the news makes us want to escape from the world.

  • Escape from Pain and Relationship

Most people seek a rebound after a painful heartbreak. Looking elsewhere for that feeling of attachment they got from someone they have had a strong connection with. Sometimes it works, but most of the time it doesn't.

It seems like they want to escape from the pain and loss, but sometimes it unexpectedly turns to the other side. They then realized that escaping is not the answer, so they ended up mourning what they have lost.

Do we really need to escape when we feel the sorrow of a broken heart? Maybe we just keep on replacing the patches.

  • Escape from Work

I personally escape from work when it seems to be so toxic - the body gets tired and the mind is full of thoughts about escape. Escapism is just a natural way of relieving from stressful work.

And in reality, most people work in their passionless job, working for granted indeed. They hate their job, the people they work with, and they hate the thought that it put a stop to their growth.

Their passionate job exists only in their psychological space. While working on their existing job, their mind is imagining another life in hand, a most likely better life.

However, after the escape and they get back to reality, was it worth it? Perhaps, mental escape is the only way.

  • Escape from Life

Some people hate their lives so much that they submerge themselves in a ridiculous amount of work. They work 70 hours a week away from home because going back there is unimaginative

Some even don't want to go home because they don't want to see the faces of the people at home. So they escape by spending their time hanging out with friends, overdosing on alcohol, barhopping, and some even become addicted to drugs.

However, do work and vices really solve the issue at home? Maybe there is something more important to do than escaping.

  • Escape from The Past

People are all a victim of the past. It is like the past robs us swiftly of life's indulgences - a culprit that is hard to catch. And regret is always part of it, we regret things we should and shouldn't have done, betrayal is our worst enemy, and we lose loved ones, and sometimes, death chases us.

We all have childhood traumas, painful truths, and heartbreaks, unfortunate circumstances, unbearable tensions, and dramas in life. And we will all forever be stuck yearning for past no longer exist. Until we acknowledge and understand what is to come instead of what has been, we will forever need to escape.

But the question is, how long will you be able to hold it? Will you wait until the dead-end before you realize what truly is important in your life?

When things seem overwhelming, sometimes we seek an escape. However, wanting to escape more often can lead to inaction, looking for satisfaction with what is in our dream rather than what is in our life.

Escapism allows us a short moment of self-care and an emotional break. But sometimes, it holds a negative connotation, implying that escapists are unhappy or with incapability to face the world and to take necessary action.

There are actually many things to do instead of escaping. Acceptance is more powerful than escapism. We should embrace the pain and learn how to surpass it. When facing circumstances, we should be strong and patient. We should not let our past ruin our present. Let the universe take over, let go of the past, and believe that we are on the right path. And most importantly, we should learn how to express our emotions and seek support from others.

The money will get us to places, but genuine bonds with the people we love will take us even further. We should not escape reality because that is what will make us stronger. It molds us into a better person. The feeling we get after an escape is just temporary, but the outcome we get from overcoming the unfortunate circumstances in life will last forever.

If only I could run away from everything lol. But it's good to have even a one day escapism, rewarding yourself to relax for just awhile and forget all the problems you have.

I don't run away from reality, I don't run away from problems, but I have to admit that I need that escape for a few days, to rest my brain from problems ... After that, I find it easier to face the problems that are inevitable ...
