Do you often spend too much time trying to decide over the most menial things? Are you reading too much into situations frequently?

Do social media accounts make you anxious as you start analyzing why somebody just unfollowed you on Instagram? Do you spend too much time figuring out what to tweet, analyzing your new partner’s cryptic song lyric statuses, or worrying about posting the perfect picture?

Do you always try to find “hidden meanings” in conversations or situations? Do you find yourself analyzing conversations with crushes or picking apart the details (deciding if “Hi” is different from “Hey”)?

If you answer ‘yes’ to these questions, it means that you are a classic over thinker.

What’s Overthinking?

Being an over thinker (trying to control the future or constantly thinking about negative situations from the recent past) is one of the most destructive mental habits.

Overthinking is actually associated with uncertainty. You probably feel vulnerable about the future and you try to solve the problems in your head, or you spend a lot of time ruminating about something that happened a long time ago.

Either way, it’s exhausting. It can make you waste your emotional energy and make you feel emotionally and physically drained.

Overthinking can consume your energy and reduce your ability to make decisions. It can also hold you back and increase your risk of anxiety.

It can also cause you to wake up in the middle of the night or prevent you from falling asleep. It can make you more emotional, make you get angry more easily and make it difficult for you to concentrate and focus on the important things.

Overthinking can make you spend too much time in your head, so that you aren’t emotionally present when you’re around other people. As you are focused on your own thoughts instead of the person in front of you, it may make them feel that you aren’t interested in what they have to say. And it may be detrimental to your relationships.

11 Things to Remember When You Are Overthinking:

– Overthinking is the voice of criticism, which tries to destroy you, because it doubts everybody and everything around you. It can make you second guess everything and doubt yourself. It can prevent you from following your instinct.

– It’s the art of creating problems that don’t even exist. Most of the time it includes thoughts about “What if?” as well as thoughts about all the things that could possibly go wrong.

-It’s the art of thinking so much about things that you ruin something before it even begins, you beat yourself up, and replay everything in your mind.

– If you are an over thinker, you get stuck in life above the shoulders, since you are curious, you want to understand the why, and you want to analyze and reflect. It may be your curse if you do not know how to be constructive with your voice.

-Overthinking can be parasitic. Letting yourself fall victim to overthinking can destroy your happiness and destroy who you are. The mind is a complex and beautiful thing and the only person that can hurt it is yourself.

-You overthink things in order to control your future or change your past — both of which are futile. Rumination about your future and past can morph into feelings of distress, worry, guilt, shame, and regret. Overthinking is a bad habit that may steal your joy and cause you emotional suffering. It will not only steal your confidence, but also your ability to solve problems.

– Your brain wants to work over-time, particularly when you are trying not to think about something or trying to fall asleep.

– Stop overthinking as you cannot control everything. You cannot control everything, so do not even try to. You can only control what’s going on in your mind. You can influence the world around you, but you cannot truly control anything. It can be frustrating, but it is how the world works.

-Overthinking will not grant you power over the things that are beyond your control. That’s why you should just let it be and cherish the moment.

– Stop worrying about what happened in the past or what tomorrow may bring. Just focus on what you can control. Enjoy today, stay positive, and expect good things to come.

-The moment you stop being a victim to overthinking, you will achieve inner peace, you will become more productive, and you are likely to be happier.
