High complexity medicine requires multiple measures to prevent infections and vast experience in solving clinical infectious problems. For this reason, the Favaloro Foundation has a service dedicated to the assistance, prevention and control of infections.
STAFF OF SPECIALISTS
The Epidemiology and Clinical Infectology team is made up of infectious disease doctors and specialized nurses, who visit the different areas of our institution on a daily basis. The group has extensive experience, especially in the infectological management of patients: transplanted patients, with cardiovascular disease, as well as patients with other types of infections.
The activities carried out by this Division include: the implementation of the Infection Prevention and Control Program and assistance activities.
INFECTION PREVENTION AND CONTROL PROGRAM
General activities
Epidemiological surveillance by components: global, surgical and critical areas (NHSN system used by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention - CDC, for its acronym in English - United States
Daily epidemiological surveillance tour through the different areas of the institution
Periodic epidemiological survey of the various areas of the University Hospital with auditing of practices and procedures regarding prevention and control of infections
Tabulation of the incidence of infections according to components and types of infection (NHSN system used by the CDC, United States)
Quarterly tabulation of the incidence of surgical site infections according to surgeon with analysis of the data obtained
Implementation of infection control measures as needed
Annual tabulation of antibiotic resistance in conjunction with the Microbiology service
Control of the rational use of antibiotics
Tabulation of antibiotic consumption at the University Hospital in defined doses / day
Analysis of the infectious aspects of building renovation projects and indication of the infectious measures that must be implemented and / or considered for their realization. Consensus with those responsible for the different areas regarding infection prevention and control measures
PATIENT-RELATED ACTIVITIES
Implementation of measures for the early detection of colonization by resistant and / or transmissible microorganisms
Indication of isolation precautions based on clinical suspicion and / or microbiological findings
Patient education on infection prevention measures after discharge: vaccination schedules, home care, management of long-term vascular access, antimicrobial prophylaxis, etc.

Annual flu vaccination of healthcare workers
Indication of the vaccination schedules that staff should receive according to the task they perform
Continuing education: incidental and scheduled for staff on issues inherent to infection prevention and control
Advice on prophylaxis measures that must be implemented after the exposure of personnel to: accidents with elements that contain materials and / or biological fluids as well as exposure to documented cases of transmissible pathologies with notification to Occupational Medicine
STANDARDIZATION
Preparation, updating and permanent dissemination of institutional recommendations for infection prevention and control in order to optimize the safety of practices and procedures for both patients and staff
Preparation, dissemination, implementation and coordination of institutional contingency plans for epidemiological eventualities in the community such as influenza, dengue, yellow fever
TEACHING
Training of fellow and / or rotating doctors in the infectious management of transplanted patients, with cardiovascular pathology as well as in that of other types of infections.
Active participation in the scientific activities carried out by the Scientific Societies of: Infectology (SADI) and Transplantation (SAT)
