What is your voice expressing?

By your appearance, you give people a certain impression of the type of person you are. This impression, of course, is based solely on what they see. People also base their judgment on what they hear. In fact, your voice is much more revealing, much more revealing than your personality. It can proclaim many things, which may or may not be true. Yes, the sound of your voice can do you good or harm you and others.

Didn't you notice that the way a person says something, the tone of voice with which he says it, tilts him for or against him and what he is saying? If his voice is warm, friendly, gentle, pleasant, isn't he likely to seduce you much more than if he sounded cold, harsh, or shrill? Yes, because we are all influenced by emotion and the tone of voice with which something is said conveys a favorable or unfavorable emotion. Thus, forty years ago, President Roosevelt, with his fireside addresses, delivered in a warm, friendly, understanding, and reassuring tone, instilled hope in many of his listeners.

Not that the way something is said is more important than what is said. You are welcome! It is better to hear the truth spoken in a cold or unpleasant voice than to speak the lie in a low voice. But the truth told in a kind, friendly and seductive way will undoubtedly be more effective than if it were said in a harsh or hateful voice.

Physical factors

There are several basic factors that determine what your voice expresses. One is the way you use your vocal organs.

Consider the question of posture. Good upright posture is essential to produce a good voice. Why? Because your voice depends on your breathing and good posture is necessary to breathe well.

Good breathing is diaphragmatic breathing. The tendency for many is to use only the upper part of the lungs, but in order to have a good, strong voice that does not tire easily, it is necessary to get used to diaphragmatic breathing, involving the lower and larger parts of the lungs. . Most people don't speak loud enough and bad breath can be the cause.

Proper use of your voice also requires you to remain relaxed - your vocal mechanism, throat, jaws, and your entire body. Why that? Because tension in one part of the body tends to tense the rest of the body. When you're tense, your voice is likely harsh or shrill, not pleasant. Or it may simply be too high, thereby losing some of its potency or effectiveness. Make an effort to stay relaxed and you will probably look relaxed.

Many people speak with poor articulation or speech. This may be due to a structural defect in the mouth. But on the other hand, these weaknesses can be due to reckless or careless speech. By thinking in consonants, these people can improve their articulation. Others may have poor articulation because they speak too fast, which is often accompanied by a nervous disposition. This can be deliberately improved by slowing down and, in particular, by focusing more on the vowel sounds. At the same time, this will result in a higher, more pleasant and musical quality of voice.

Psychological factors

Obviously, the physical factors that govern voice quality that we just considered are only one side of the coin. The other aspect, which could be equally important, is the psychological and personality factors. These refer to the mental, emotional and religious aspects of speech.

In fact, this is so much that a book on voice training claims that voice training should go hand in hand with personality training or improvement. Although improving your personality is more difficult than learning your voice, don't forget that improving your voice in some way depends on improving your personality.

So if you are an outgoing, confident, cheerful and friendly person, your voice will reflect these favorable qualities. On the other hand, if you are shy, moody, indifferent or arrogant, intolerant, critical, harsh, or emotionally upset, your voice will show it, even if it reports your physical condition if you are weak or ill. Therefore, if you do not want your voice to convey these impressions to others, you must remove these qualities from your personality and replace them with optimistic, understanding, alert and confident qualities. You will find that by making a careful effort to express these qualities, other people will respond kindly and assist you in your efforts.

Without a doubt, our voices are capable of a great variety. Every time we speak, we have a message to convey. Make sure your voice matches your message. In this way, you will be able to better honor your Creator, communicate better with your neighbor, and obtain maximum satisfaction from using this wonderful tool, your voice.
