This happens to lead batteries, and consists of the transformation of the active material of the plate into lead sulfate, followed by a progressive crystallization of lead sulfate itself. It is noted by a white film that reduces the capacity of the plate, until it becomes unusable.
The battery loses its power due to a rapid discharge of the battery. when the engine does not start and one insists to the point that the battery is dead; at that moment the sulphation begins.
Rapid charges performed with excessive charge current also produce sulfation effects, so avoid rapid charging after the battery has been drained of electrical current. Also an imbalance of the voltage regulator can provide an excessive charge that will accelerate the process of sulfation of the accumulators within the battery.
The most effective way to avoid sulfation is to keep the battery well charged. How? Well, by checking if the load provided by the voltage regulator is the necessary to ensure the proper functioning of the electrical equipment.
It should be avoided that the battery is inactive for a long time, since this will cause a loss of current, causing sulfation.
An inactive battery should be recharged at least once a week, by a slow charging process.
Check it with a voltmeter to determine its condition and the periodicity in which it should be charged.
The excessive abuse of the battery leads to reducing its capacity little by little, causing the generator not to have enough charge. This abuse is generated by adding excessive electrical accessories to the car, without increasing the capacity of the battery.
Also the low level of the electrolyte or body that is chemically decomposed by an electrical charge leaves the plates exposed to the air, allowing sulfation in them. For this reason, it is necessary that the battery has water at its full capacity, in addition to that a low water battery is decompensating the acid balance and will not take enough charge.
