Why is there a need to register a firearm in the Philippines?

There are a lot of things to consider and reasons why there's a need to register a firearm. It could aid the investigation of a crime that involves a shoot out or shooting incident. If a firearm or gun powder residue were recovered from the crime scene, the forensic chemist will proceed in ballistic examinations and make comparisons in order to identify if the firearm is registered or not. And if it is a registered gun, the investigator will look for its owner by searching the names in the Firearms Information Management System. FIMS refers to the compilation of all data and information on firearms ownership and disposition for record purpose. It is very effective and quite reliable in identifying and tracing the owner of firearms that were used in a crime. It can also easily identify if a firearm is lost or stolen. And also, a firearm is needed to be registered because if it is not registered the person who possesses that firearm may be liable in violating RA 10591 or he/she would be the subject for OPLAN katok of Philippine National Police.
