Our story begins in Strasbourg in the middle of July 1518, a woman was walking when suddenly she dropped her things on the floor and started dancing.
People ignored her but 4 days passed and she was still dancing and smiling, a week later 34 people had joined her, I want to clarify that chronicles of the time, notes from doctors and even the notes from the municipality of Strasbourg are emphatic that they were dancing.
A month later there were 400 dancers dancing to the point of surrender, some even died of exhaustion or strokes.
No one knew what was going on.
The authorities sought advice from the doctors of the time and they, after analyzing the events, suggested that it was something supernatural.
Instead of looking for help, medicine or even prescribing care for the dancing people, the local nobles sent them to build a stage.
And they thought that if they danced day and night until they surrendered they would be cured, so they also hired musicians and well, it became crazy, it seemed like a music festival or flash mob.
The mysterious thing is that it was not the first time that something like this happened, in 1028 there are chronicles that it happened in Colbigk (Saxony) in 1247, then in Erfurt also in Germany later that same year 200 people also danced in Maastricht, Netherlands.
The Strasbourg case was not the last, either, since there are dozens of cases registered in Switzerland, France, Italy and a long etcetera, but if you feel that the story is very far away, I tell you that it has continued to happen and not too long ago...
In 1962, 3 girls started laughing non-stop at a school in a village by Lake Tangananica, 95 school boys started doing the same and in 16 days there were already more than 1000 cases and 14 schools closed because the boys did not stop of laughing.
