Stand on your ground
A lot of people believe that being nice is the same as being weak. But this should not be confused with being kind. In a compassionate world we'd all want to get along, but that does not mean we should accept our differences. It's easy to be nice, it's easy to agree, it's easy to be like everybody else. It takes a lot more strength and courage to stand your ground and say no.
There is this song we do sing in primary school.
π΅ Wherever you go,
Where ever you be!πΆ
π΅ Do not say YES,
When you mean to say no.πΆ
At some point in our lives, each of us encounters an inconvenient truth. All too often these truths are uncomfortable, but ignoring them is the true folly.
It's a powerful thing, this idea of freedom of speech, and it comes at a cost. We must all remain vigilant, to hold one another accountable in the exercise of that sacred right. We must protect each other from the oppression of life's inconvenient truths by never standing silent.
The first step to defending against an enemy is to know them. One can't defeat an enemy they don't know exists. To win any war we must know both our enemy and ourselves we must know the truth and be true to it.
One would think this message is one that would be universally embraced. But the reality is we live in a time where being true to oneself has become a revolutionary act.
It is about being unafraid and taking the decisions that others may think are 'hard'. It's about being fearless in the face of your fears. It's about looking yourself in the mirror and accepting your true self. In a world around us where we are constantly bombarded with images of what we should be, who we should love and how we should behave, it is important to remember one thing - to stand your ground.
Stand up for yourself. Stand up for others. Stand up for your beliefs. Stand up for what is right. Be the brave one. Stand up, protect your values, own your opinions and say NO when you need to.
