I think… I may not be the best person you could ever ask to write about motivation because bluntly speaking, I’ve never really been one who enjoys listening and reading motivational speeches and passages. I get that for some people, they need that extra push and reminder but for me, it’s always been different. I honestly have never needed a push or a reminder. I know how to motivate myself. Unlike most though, I’m not so reliant on the tangible, I look more into habits than anything.
By definition, motivation is the reason why you’re acting a particular way. In most cases, it’s seen in a positive light and is often a very needed component in achieving dreams and goals, something tangible for most people.
When I think of motivation, the first thing I think of is a mental state and graduality. Those are the best ways in which I can pull any form of motivation, really.
Motivation is a state of mind in the sense that you can easily fall into a rhythm or a pace once you start on something and you focus on it. I don’t know if anyone has ever noticed this but when your environment is fitting for a certain task, or you’re already working on a task, you can sometimes easily focus. And I do think that aside from being in a state of focus, you’re already motivated enough to do a task. Motivation isn’t so hard to achieve, honestly, you just need to know how you would pace yourself and you just need to get to know the task at hand.
In my case, once I already find a pace for myself, I already count myself as motivated, whether it be art, studying, or cooking. My initial complaints don’t matter because my focus falls on the task.
Then at times, when a fitting state of mind isn’t enough, I think of graduality. The progress I’ve made so far. As much as a task can be tiring and sometimes motivation does run out, just stop and think of how all your efforts gradually became something so significant. Be it in the positive light or negative light. But of course, we will always strive harder when it’s on a positive note.
Another thing I do enjoy with getting motivation from graduality is that it becomes part of your habits. Something as simple as say, stretching your body for some 15-30 minutes, at first you’ll really need all the motivation and energy the world can give you to even get out of bed, especially on a rainy day. But come a few weeks, a few months and you won’t even need to find the motivation for it, it just happens naturally.
I know it doesn’t really make sense to you guys but this is the motivation for me, it’s on a natural and functional view and not on tangible things like people, family, and goals. I try to motivate myself just for the sake of finishing a task because that is the most basic of reasons for me to do something, allocating a task because she wants me to do this or he wants me to do this just stresses me out and takes me longer to finish any task at hand. But when I say: I need to finish this I know I have to with or without any other motive to back it up. It’s a miserable view to some and is very borderline unmotivated, actually. Yes, it kinda is, but then, some actions and tasks really don’t require a motive, they just need to be done and that’s that.
