Achieving Mastery and Survival in crypto-world - Day 68

I am reading a book about Ultralearning. Basically is a method, or rather a bunch of methods on how to learn everything really really fast. It is easy to explain, but hard to follow. You know that story, when you need to make a detailed 10 years plan on what are your objectives, and then ask yourself what do you need to do to make it happen in one year. Now, the methods you use to make that happen are called Ultralearning.

There are the basic skills, and the minor skills. To become good at something you need to learn the basic skills. You may even master them. To do this you need 100 hours to become decent, 1000 hours to become good and 10.000 hours to master the skill. Levels to be achieved, in order, are: beginner, novice, average, good, master and virtuoso. Of course, there are many variables. You want to become a weather man, you do the university degree for that. But if you want to learn how to do it, you may want to become a meteorologist. Again, 10.000 hours of practice, and you are there. If you want to specialize in snow related events and polar weather may even take longer. Unless you grow up with an eskimo tribe, in this case you may only need 5000 hours.

And then, there is the idea of extrapolation. When you apply skills from another domains that you already know. You study history, and you focus on generals and armies, and battles of the past. You learn to play a team based game, you may apply this knowledge into becoming a better player. The reverse is also possible. Game theory, when you are a pro-gamer, can help you in tactical battles in real life.

Mastering the basic skills make you a master. Right bellow this, applying the 80/20 theory, you can spend 20% of the time needed to master something to learn 80% of the main knowledge. But in order to become a virtuoso, one of the top 10 people in the whole world, then you need to master the minor skills also. The more you know, the easiest it is. Think about languages. Choose randomly, let's say Romance languages. You learn French. Then you learn Romanian. After the first two, you can learn Italian in less than 3 months. At this level, you already understand Spanish, so it will be quite easy to add it to the list. Then is matter of weeks to learn Portuguese. But this is not all. You know Spanish, for example, the kind of Spanish they speak in Spain. But, there areanother 18 countries speaking Spanish, in a different way. Few months in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela will make you able to pick up the differences, and by the time you have only few countries from the list left, I bet it will be quite easy to become proeficient at it. Learning the main language is easy, learning all the dialects is a lifetime struggle. And probably it is the same with any other language.

Now, let's go to the low hanging fruit. Crypto. What do you plan to do with it? Trading, IT, maths, game theory, economics, human behavior. The list is endless. What is your main plan. How do you think to improve your portfolio, and what methods do you want to use? Make the 10 year plan. Make it good, and to the slightest detail. And then find the gaps, and learn the skills needed to make it in one year. It is hard, but not impossible.

As Richard Bach used to say: “There is no such thing as a problem without a gift for you in its hands. You seek problems because you need their gifts.”

You can also check this book to learn how to train some other skills in order to learn fast.

This is all for today,

George

Somehow I'm not so enthusiastic about this ultralearning thing. I just feel it's one of those abstract sciences

It is mostly about practice and perseverence. Long term plans. You keep doing it and eventually become better than the most.
