What's comes to your mind when you hear the word body odor?
Most of the time, when we encounter bad-smelling people, we blame it on poor hygiene. Wearing dirty clothes, skipping the shower, and not brushing the teeth are the typical culprits. But it is not always the case.
We have sweat glands all over our body, but the apocrine gland is concentrated in the armpit, groin, and scalp. When the sweat from apocrine glands reacts with bacteria on our skin, it causes body odor. But consistent body odor can be caused by other medical conditions. So here are some of the causes of BO that is beyond hygiene.
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). This medical condition can cause bad breath because of the regular reflux of stomach acids.
Overactive Thyroid. Thyroid glands cause the body to sweat. When a person has an overactive thyroid, it can cause the body to produce excessive sweat, which can cause excessive body odor.
Liver and Kidney dysfunction. The liver and kidney help remove toxins from the body. When these organs fail to function properly, toxins can build up in the blood and digestive tract, creating odor.
Hormonal Fluctuation. Common symptoms of hormonal fluctuation such as hot flashes and night sweats can contribute to excessive sweating and increase body odor.
These are some of the medical conditions that can cause BO. Although these might be the case for some people, it is always better to consult a medical professional in case you notice something smelly in your body.
