LAPIANG MALAYA MASSACRE

May 21, 1967

54 years ago, there was a bloody encounter between the Philippine Constabulary (now the Philippine National Police) and the 'Lapiang Malaya' group.

Lapiang Malaya is a group founded by Bicolano Valentin de los Santos in the 40s. Its members grew into the 50s to 60s who were mostly poor farmers from southern Luzon. Its leader de los Santos is believed to be able to communicate with Bathala even the souls of some Filipino heroes such as José Rizal. The group promotes ‘true justice, equality, and freedom’. In fact, de los Santos and Restituto Fresto even ran as president and vice president in the 1957 presidential election but failed from Carlos Garcia and Diosdado Macapagal. They also ran for the Senate election in 1957 but also failed to win.

May 20, 1967. More than 300 members of the Lapiang Malaya gathered. They aim to overthrow the Marcos regime because of the issue of poverty, landlessness of the peasants, and exploitation of Western countries in the Philippines. They marched to Malacañan carrying only amulets, bolos, and spears. Before reaching the Palace, they were stopped by the Philippine Constabulary on Taft Avenue, Pasay. Believing that they would not be hit by guns because of their amulets, they opposed the police which resulted in the death of 33 rallyists. The rest were imprisoned and charged with sedition.

On the other hand, instead of being imprisoned, the leader of the group, de los Santos, was taken to the National Center for Mental Health. It is said that de los Santos was beaten and died at the hospital.
