KING SEJONG WAS BORN OF THE JOSEON DYNASTY OF KOREA
May 15, 1397
Today is the 624th birthday of what is considered one of the great kings who ruled Korea during the Joseon dynasty and the father of the Korean national alphabet Hangeul King Sejong. He was born as Yi Do on this day in 1397, and the third child of King Taejong and Queen Wongyeon. He was appointed king to succeed his father after Prince Yangnyeong was stripped of his royal title.
Yi Do was crowned as Sejong at the age of 21 in 1418 as the fourth king of the Joseon dynasty. As king of Joseon, he intensified the philosophy of Confucianism and enforced decrees throughout the kingdom based on the philosophy of Confucius. But King Sejong’s most important legacy to his regime was to create a simple alphabet system that would replace their traditional Chinese alphabet that was more complex. King Sejong saw the problem of using Chinese characters in their language because the spellings of the Chinese character did not suit them. In 1441 he enacted the official use of Hunminjeong-eum or simple Hangeul, which consists of 14 consonants and 10 vowels, and has 27 complex letters. It became the official alphabet of the entire kingdom, to this day in North and South Korea. Due to the use of Hangeul the proportion of literacy throughout the kingdom increased and Korean literature flourished further during the reign of King Sejong. The period of King Sejong is also considered the Golden Age of Korea, because under his regime the study of astronomy, meteorology and other branches of science flourished, and agriculture and commerce also developed in the kingdom.
From his coronation in 1418, his royal father, Taejong, became his co-ruler until he became independent in 1422. Simultaneously with King Sejong's glorious rule, his health declined and he gradually became blind. It was 1442 when his heir prince and son to Queen Soheon Munjong ruled the kingdom on behalf of his father, until King Sejong died at the age of 52 on April 8, 1450.
King Sejong is considered one of the great ruling kings of Korea. From its monument in the city of Seoul, to movies and shows, to their money, Koreans cherish the memory of their king, and in 2007 a special autonomous city in South Korea was named after him.
