THE PROCLAMATION OF THE INDEPENDENCE OF THE PHILIPPINES

June 12, 1898

Past 4:20 pm, in a lavish ceremony outside the house of General Emilio Aguinaldo in the town of Cavite el Viejo (now Kawit, Cavite), one of the historic scenes in our country took place. On this day, from the central window, General Aguinaldo faced the crowd, carrying the Filipino flag in white, red and blue with three yellow stars and the Sun with a face and eight rays, sewn by Marcela Agoncillo. in Hong Kong. Auditor de Guerra Ambrosio Rianzares Bautista read his Acta dela Proclamacion dela Independencia del Pueblo Filipino, which declared the independence of our country from more than three centuries of Spanish occupation. This proclamation states the long history of the Spanish conquest of our country since Fernando Magallanes visited us, and acknowledges the heroism and martyrdom of Dr. Jose Rizal, of Gomburza and others who fought in the revolution against Spain. This proclamation also stated the oath to love and defend the country and the flag it represents until death.

After this, General Aguinaldo handed the flag to Rianzares Bautista and to the accompaniment of the Marcha Filipino Magdalo composed by Julian Felipe, Bautista waved the flag in front of the celebrating people. This ceremony was colorful, and 98 people signed the Acta, including the only American witness to your proclamation Colonel L.M. Johnson. This is the most important achievement of the dictatorial government of General Aguinaldo.

On the first day of August, when the delegates of every province throughout the country in Bacoor, Cavite adopted the proclamation of the independence of the Philippines in recognition of the revolutionary government, and on September 29, 1898 was ratified by the Malolos Congress. the proclamation. Since then, the colorful celebration of Philippine Independence Day on June 12, was not witnessed again, until 1962, when the first Philippine Independence Day celebration was held in Luneta under the leadership of President Diosdado Macapagal, and witnessed by senior veterans of the revolution, including the then 93 -year -old Emilio Aguinaldo.

ANNE FRANK WAS BORN

June 12, 1929

Today is the 92nd birthday of the Jewish maiden and famous diarist Annelise Marie Frank or better known to us by the name Anne Frank. He is the youngest of two children of the couple Otto and Edith Frank, and was born in the city of Frankfurt-am-Main in Germany.

Anneliese was four years old when her family fled to the Netherlands in 1933, when German anti -Semitic dictator Adolf Hitler rose to power. There he was able to study while there his father Otto continued his business.

The quiet life of the Franks and many other Jewish refugees from Germany was disturbed when Nazi Germany invaded the Netherlands in 1940. During their conquest, oppressive Nazi laws against Jews were also enforced there, and as time went on the Franks were more at risk of being caught by the Nazis. Otto first thought of fleeing to America with his family, but the American border was closed to Germany because war broke out between the two in 1941. So in a secret annex in the upper part of the building where Otto worked, they hid. Anne Frank in June 1942, along with another Jewish family close to the Franks Augusta, Hermann and their son Peter van Pels, and another Jew Fritz Pfeffer. The Dutch who cared for the Frank family, Miep Guess, Viktor Kugler and Bep Voskuijl, helped in their hideout, who bought food for the Franks and provided information about what was happening outside. That same year Anne received from her mother for her 13th birthday a simple diary, which she gave her own design. Her diary for nearly two years of hiding her experiences with her family and the Van Pels family while hiding in the secret annex, and her unwavering positive outlook and hope in life despite everything she experiences. . This diary will be the book that many people around the world will read and one of a Jew’s first-hand accounts of the Holocaust. The Frank family rejoiced at the news of the arrival of the Allies in Normandy, France, in the hope that they too would be freed from Nazi oppression. But on August 4, 1944, the Gestapo raided the secret annex and arrested the Franks and Van Pels, and to this day it remains a mystery whether the Nazis were accused of hiding their hideouts.

The Frank and Van Pels family were taken to the Auschwitz death camp in Krakow, Poland where the Franks were forced to work and the Augusta and Herman van Pels were killed in gas chambers. Anne's mother was also killed in gas chambers, while Otto was left in Auschwitz while his two children, Anne and Margot, were taken from him to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in northern Germany. It is said that the Frank brothers were last seen alive in such a camp between March and April 1945, before they eventually died of typhus.

The girl Anne died at the age of 15 while her sister Margot was 18. They were among more than 19,700 prisoners who died in the camp, weeks before the British liberated the camp on April 15, 1945.
