GEORGE CANSECO WAS BORN

April 23, 1934

How Often Once ?, Borrowed, I Wish There Was No Tomorrow, Until The End Of Eternity, Only Yesterday, Is It Here ?, Sand Castle, Should I Love You ?, I Worship You. These are some of the classical Filipino songs that not only accentuate the original Filipino music but were raised by Filipinos who lived in the 70s to 90s, and even became the theme song of some popular teleseries.

If there is one person behind these songs, it is none other than composer and songwriter George Masangkay Canseco, who is now in his 87th birthday.

He was born on this day in 1934 in the town of Naic, Cavite. After attending Naic Elementary School and Jose Abad Santos High School, he entered the University of the East with a journalism course and then worked as a news editor for the Philippine Herald and Associated Press newspapers. While he was an editor he also started writing and composing his own songs, and later he used his talent for Vicor Music after discovering the talent of the owner of the recording studio and his cousin. . He also worked part-time as a screenwriter at Manila Broadcasting Company and Eagle Broadcasting.

When there was Martial Law throughout the Philippines almost all newspapers and TV networks in the country stopped, so he also stopped his job, but not his writing and making songs, when he was commissioned by former First Lady Imelda Marcos who made the song Ako Ay Pilipino. It was 1978 when his songs started to become popular with the release of the song "Ngayon at Kailanman", sung by veteran singer Basil Valdez. During his more than three decades of career as a songwriter and composer, he has produced more than 300 songs in Filipino and English, rendered by famous singers such as Regine Velasquez, Kuh Ledesma, Pilita Corrales, Zsazsa. Padilla, Sharon Cuneta, and Martin Nievera, but Basil Valdez was the best at renditioning his songs. Canseco has been the President of the Filipino Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers or FILSCAP since 1973.

Canseco also entered politics when he was elected congressman of the fourth district of Quezon City. Her songs have won many awards such as the FAMAS Awards and awards abroad.

Canseco passed away at the age of 60 on November 19, 2004.

ORDERED THE DESTRUCTION OF THE GALLEON TRADE

April 23, 1815

After 250 years of trade relations between the Philippines and Mexico, the Manila-Acapulco Galleon Trade, King Fernando VII of Spain on this day in 1815 implemented a royal decree abolishing the Galleon Trade. This was the result of the spreading revolution in Mexico for their independence from Spanish colonial occupation, and the emerging free trade with Britain and the United States. And by virtue of this edict of the king, the Galleon trade finally ended on September 14, 1815, when the last galleon left the port of Manila from Acapulco.

During the 250 years of trade between the Philippines and Mexico, the two countries exchanged not only products, but also cultures and traditions, language and food. The Chinese also became partners in this trade as attractive Chinese silk flowed into the Pacific Ocean from Manila and China to Mexico. Many of the original Mexican-brand crops have been introduced in our country and in China, particularly corn, sayote, chili and others.

Although the British occupied Manila in 1762 this trade continued. However, the galleon trade did not fully help the economy because Spanish officials and even the Governor-General were too focused on enriching this trade, and only wealthy Spanish residents of Manila benefited from this trade. The King of Spain directly controlled Philippine international trade, when Spain directly ruled our country in 1821.

HERMANN GOERING AND HEINRICH HIMMLER TREAT ADOLF HITLER

April 23, 1945

On April 23, 1945, as the German forces dwindled in the battle in Berlin against the Soviets, Nazi German dictator Adolf Hitler tasted on this day in 1945 the most painful betrayal committed in him two of his most trusted officers; Hermann Goering chief of the Luftwaffe or air force and Heinrich Himmler chief of the Schutzstaffel. They were the ones Hitler hoped would succeed him, deciding to take extraordinary steps without permission from Hitler. They both convinced Hitler to leave Berlin.

While Goering was in Obersalzburg in southern Germany, he sent a telegram to Hitler who was in his underground bunker, asking for Hitler's permission to take the position as leader of Germany, as he was expected to replace it. Goering added that if Hitler did not respond before 10 pm, Goering would think that the Fuhrer was dead and would take the position. Nazi party Reichsleiter Martin Bormann received such a message and read to Hitler Goering's request for the Führer to resign. Hitler angrily regarded Goering’s message as an attempted coup against him, which was endorsed by his loyal Propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels.

While this was happening, Himmler, whom Hitler had sent to northern Germany to monitor the defenses there, secretly met with British and American officials in the town of Lubeck to negotiate peace with them, with the help of Count von Bernadotte.

On 25 April, Hitler sent a reply to Goering accusing him of treason, and resigning him from all his government positions, in exchange for his life. Goering did retire as head of the Luftwaffe for "health reasons", and Hitler in turn chose General Robert Ritter von Greim as the new Chief of the Luftwaffe and promoted him to the rank of Generalfeldmarschal. Bormann ordered Goering's arrest and house arrest. He was arrested by the Americans after the war in May 1945.

On April 28, Hitler discovered the "greatest betrayal" committed by what he considered to be his most loyal disciple, Himmler. As he did with Goering, he considered Himmler a traitor and resigned him from his posts in exchange for his life. Hitler also searched for Himmler's adjutant SS-Gruppenfuhrer Hermamn Fegelein, who was discovered trying to flee Berlin without Hitler's permission. He ordered the immediate shooting of Fegelein on charges of desertion and treason.

The British caught Himmler fleeing with fake papers, and poisoned himself during interrogation on May 23, 1945. Goering was among those tried in the Nuremberg Trials to face charges such as the crime against to humanity and sentenced to be hanged, but he also poisoned himself an hour before his execution on October 16, 1946.

The original copy of Goering's controversial telegram was found inside the Fuhrerbunker in July 1945, and after coming into the care of a history professor in South Carolina in America, the copy of the telegram was auctioned for $ 54,675 or over 2.6 million pesos.
