In English grammar, there are tons of prepositions. It is very hard to memorise them all moreover we don't use all the prepositions at a time.
There are some common prepositions we use everyday. And sometimes they are confusing,we make mistake.
Here in my article,I will discuss those prepositions and where to use them correctly and will explain them.
Grammar is fun, you'll every thing. Let's start with our first preposition.
1) Above:
You can use this preposition to denote something i.e temperature, height, sound is comparatively more, high or increased.
When you are expressing the weather and it is more cold than today, you need to use "above" in the sentence. Let's study an example.
Example: Today's temperature is five degree above zero.
In this sentence we are comparing today's temperature with the previous day's temperature.
In previous day the temperature was zero and today it increased to five. That means today is warm than yesterday. I think I've made it clear.
Again I'm repeating, if you want to express something which is more in number or proportion than you need to use the preposition "above".
2) Beyond:
You'll use this preposition when something has gone past the border. Say we use a term "beyond imagination" that means imagining out of the box.
That has no limit. If you want to write something limitless you need to use this preposition "beyond".
Just remember one thing, beyond means anything limitless.
Example: Her artworks are beyond imagination.
This sentence means her artworks are splendid, you are very impressed with them and these artworks have gone past your imagination limit.
You didn't imagine anything before. Let's repeat this again.Beyond means limitless, out of the box.
You'll be amazed knowing that this word "beyond" also means limited. Well, that depends on the sentence and how this word are used there.
Confused?Let me make it clear to you. See this example:
She must not go home beyond this month.
Now what you are understanding with this sentence? That means she should not go home this month.
She can go home next month but not this month. If you want to draw a border of time or border of something you can use this preposition easily.
Just remember whenever you use focus what you are trying to express. The way you use "beyond" in your sentence, the meaning will change the same way.
Everything depends what your sentence is demanding from you.
3) Against:
This preposition means opposite to something. Say you are not agreeing with someone.
You've different opinions. We can say you are against his proposals. If you want to write something opposite to the main one you can easily use "against".
Not only opinions remember you can use against to express something opposite to.
Example:
I and my friends are against his proposals.
Karen is swimming against the current.
If you look closely the second sentence you will see that Karen is swimming the opposite way of the current.
So,to express something opposite to, contrary, contradictory you can use "against".
4) Difference between among and between:
Sometimes we tend to create confusion between these two words. See here I used between. Now when to use between and when to use among.Let's start with between.
Between:
To express something in middle of two.Always remember between means two. Say your mother is divided an apple between you and your brother.
In that case there are two subject in that sentence. One is you and the other is your brother. Now calculate how many subject are there?
Two! Now you can use "between". Remember between means anything related to in the middle of two.
Example:
He need to take a crucial decision between life and death.
I have lost my phone between my bed and table.
Rafee sat between Rupal and Dilip.
We need to choose one between tea and coffee.
See above the sentences there are two different entities that are corresponding. I think from now on you'll never do the mistake again.
If you need to write something in the middle of two than take "between".
Among:
To be precise, among means more than two. It can be three, four or more. To denote something in the midst of more than two you need to use "among".
Among means more than two. Let's study few examples of "among"
Example:
Our volunteer team is working among the deprived people.
The big house is among the trees.
Our teacher is sharing knowledge among the students.
Now have a look at the main theme of the above sentences. People, trees, students all the words means more than two in number.
If you still didn't understand, you can ask me any questions.
5) About:
To express something relating to, regarding.
Example: I've nothing to say about the incident.
6) After:
Someone's or something's back.
Example: Karen is running after money. D comes after C.
7)Before:
It means first, face to face or in front of someone or something.
Example: The thief was brought before the crowd.
I will share everything before him.
8)Over:
A mean of communication, how you communicate.
Example: I've talked to Karen over telephone.
Before the word telephone I've used over. Telephone is a media of communication.
Here are the most common prepositional mistakes that we make every day. I've tried to make it clear some of them in my article.
There are more prepositions like these. On my next articles, I'll share more mistake prone prepositions so that you can make your writing better and correct.
