Have you ever experience emotional pain? Obviously, your answer is YES for everyone experiences this due to lots of reasons, whether it is small or big.
I started writing this article on the day I experienced an emotional pain (It was on 1st week of this month but now I am pretty well). However, I was not able to finish it because I was too emotional that time and lots of things happened around me.
Today, I would like to share some ways to easily deal with emotional pain. But, first here are some causes of emotional pain.
Sadness
Unexpressed Anger
Anxiety
Loss of loved ones
Failures
Loneliness
Break-Ups
These are basic emotions and situations we cannot easily control and predict, which gives us emotional pain.
They may be unpredictable situations or emotions yet it is very important to learn on how to cope or deal with emotional pain because it may leads to mental health problem like depression if someone do not overcome it. Besides it might lead to long-term physical consequences that can ruin your life.
Symptoms of emotional pain can include feelings of:
Loneliness or isolation
Negative emotions
Panic
Rage
Deep sorrow, sadness, or depression
Grief
Intense distress
Shame
Worthlessness
What can you do to cope with your emotional pain? Perhaps you could turn to alcohol to numb the pain. Or you might use food to cope and over time start binging.
Buying something new like clothes, gadgets or drinking alcohol to distract yourself is okay when it is in moderation, but when any of them become your primary coping strategy it can lead to more stress than relief.
Here are some better ways to cope with emotional pain:
Start a New Hobby
Start a new hobby. Something that you’ve always wanted to try or maybe something that you already know you love but haven’t made the time for. Use this to help yourself identify your interests and passions.
This week I start a new hobby which is playing a guitar. This is one of my interest that I always wanted to try but it always postponed due to laziness for playing guitar is not easy but since I sometimes experience emotional pain I decided to start a new hobby that might help me.
Move Your Body
While suffering from emotional pain, getting out from your bedroom is very hard. But did you know that this can contribute to greater heaviness and depression?
Yes, you read it right. Instead of thinking your pain, go for a short walk; stand up and stretch or dance to uplifting music at home.
Any physical movement may help you release the pain from your body. Moving when you’re feeling down can decrease your energy yet and lift your spirits and can also help mobilize your nervous system giving you energy.
Keep or write a Journal / Diary
Did something good happen to you today or have a troublesome thoughts? Write it in a journal along with a comment about how you’ll overcome this. Writing down what you feel is very helpful to lessen your emotional pain. This is effective for I was did it when I experienced emotional pain.
Cry
Crying has some health benefits such as relieving stress and releasing toxins from your body. If it is difficult for you to cry, try watching a movie that has similar themes to the pain you’re in because when we block our emotions it may tend our body to use physical strategies such as altering breathing and constricting muscles. These behaviors over time can lead to physical symptoms with digestion, chronic pain or immune related issues.
Stop Telling the Story
At first this can help, but you must learn when to stop telling the story as you’re just opening up the wound again. Rather, focus on where you are now. What you have you overcome and the good things you have used to get past the emotional pain.
Talk to someone (loved ones)
Does it hurt you to see someone especially your loved ones suffering emotional pain? It is the same for your loved ones when they see you suffering.
Don’t avoid others and stay in your room. Instead, Let them in, it benefits both them and you. Humans are social creatures, isolating yourself ends up exacerbating your pain.
Write a list of What You’re Thankful For
Write down everything that is good and positive happened in your life, whether it is small or big. Write it all down and reflect upon it.
The point is not to disregard negative emotions. It’s important to allow yourself to feel grateful especially when you are suffering emotional pain. Do not forget to sight all the good things happens to you or around you.
To Sum up, Emotional pain is what everyone's feel from time to time due of challenges and struggles on our lives. It is one of the things we cannot avoid for we are humans with feelings and emotions. Lots of things can change our mood quickly and may hurt us emotionally.
Learning some ways (like the mentioned above) on how to cope with emotional pain is very important to avoid making things worse for you that may destroy yourself physically and emotionally.
Even though, lots of ways are being given online or mentioned in articles like this, it is still important to consult the right person (therapist/ doctor) when you are having a hard time to deal with emotional pain to make sure you are on the right track.
I hope you learn something new on this article.
