In response to the incident that has been happening in Nigeria it will be important to know why the government was given power. Different political parties organize campaigns or manifestos saying that they will do all sorts of good things. Some say they will improve the country's infrastructure, they will promote economic development but none ever really know the best services to give your citizens. There are simply little important duties the government can provide before moving to other irrelevant things. Lets look at those duties the government are to offer to the people.
DUTIES OF GOVERNMENT TOWARDS THE CITIZENS
As the citizens perform their duties and obligations which we have discussed earlier, the government on its on part carry out the following duties in maintain a mutual and cordial relationship with the citizens.
1) Law-Making: the government through the legislature makes laws to regulate conduct of her citizens in the country.
2) Maintenance of Law and Order: it is the responsibility of government to maintain peace, law and order through the establishment of the police and the judiciary.
3) Protection of Life and Property: life and property of citizens are to be protected by the law enforcement agents and the law courts.
4) Policy Formulation: it is the duty of the government to formulate policies, programmes for the good governance of the citizens.
5) Defence: the government through a well-equipped Armed Forces defends the citizens against any external aggression.
6) Provision of Social Services: it is the responsibility of the government to provide functional social amenities such as schools, hospitals, electricity, drinkable water, good roads, etc.
7) Maintenance of Diplomatic Relations: it is the duty of the government to maintain cordial relations with other countries, establish embassies and cater for the interest of her citizens both at home and in diaspora(Abroad).
8) Responsibility: the government should conduct a free, fair and credible election to ensure smooth transition from civil rule to civil rule. it creates conducive atmosphere for partisan politics.
SKILLS THAT PROMOTE INTER-PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP
The following are skills that promote interpersonal relationship in the society:
1) Honesty.
2) Tolerance.
3) Kindness.
4) Caring.
5) Patience.
Honesty is the attribute of being truthful, sincere and straightforward in one’s dealings with people. An honest person is a principled person who cannot be influenced or bought over on issues.
Tolerance is the ability or willingness of someone or a group to accept other peoples’ opinion, ideas or behavior even when one may not agree with such opinion. It is being accommodating towards other people’s shortcomings or excesses.
Kindness is the quality of treating people with considerations and it promotes interpersonal relationship. A kind person is humane and does not hesitate to help those in need.
Caring is the quality of being helpful and kind to others. A caring person renders unsolicited help to others, e.g. helping the sick, the old, physically challenged as well people in various kinds of help or support.
Patience is the ability to stay calm and accept a delay or something irritating without complaining. Interpersonal relationship requires patience.
