Key Terms

Elegy: This is a poem that is sung for somebody who has given up the ghost or died.

Lyric: This is a song that expresses personal emotions or thoughts.

Panegyric: This is a public speech or published text in praise of someone or something.

Ode: This is a lyric poem that expresses love, respect or praise for someone or something.

Dramatic Monologue: This is a poem that portrays a solitary speaker communing with the audience, without any dialogue coming from other characters.

Farce: This is a play that thrives on exaggeration of humor, plot, and character.

Aside: This is when a speaker on stage mumbles words intended for the audience only.

Verbal Irony: This is when a speaker on stage intends more than he says.

Sonnet: This is made up of a rhyming sestet and two rhyming quatrains.

Soliloquy: This is a speech delivered by a character who is alone on the stage.

Apostrophe: This is the address to an object or person not present.

Some Facts

Burlesque, tragedy and pantomime are types of drama.

Resolution is not a type of drama.

Malapropism is also known as Dogberryism.
