Meaning:

Interpersonal relationship is the interaction that exists between persons in a social setting or in an organization or institution. It could also be said to be mutual or cordial relationship that exists between people despite differences in race, age, tribe, religious or political affiliation.

Forms of Interpersonal Relationships

1) Co-operation: this has to do with the ability to work together towards a shared aim or goal. It is the willingness to work together with people to achieve those things we cannot achieve as individuals.

2) Competition: a social situation in which individuals and groups compete with each other or among one another for something that not everyone can have. It can bring joy and promote love.

3) Conflict: this is a state of quarrel or confusion. Conflict does not permit atmosphere of progress, unity, co-operation and love in any society.

4) Coercion: this is the act of making someone do something against his will which involves the use of force or threats. Sometimes, some of our law enforcement agents are guilty of this.

5) Exchange: exchange involves the act of giving something to somebody in return for good or services rendered. It can also apply in commercial sense where people exchange money for goods or goods for goods. Exchange makes trade and businesses to be smooth and meaningful.

Types of interpersonal Relationships

1) Relationship Among Peers: remember that peers refer to playmates usually of age brackets either within one’s immediate community or inter-community or school community. Peers spend time together in the classroom, play ball together, etc. peers can influence their mates positively and negatively.

Positive Peer Influence:

here are some of the positive influence of peer grouping:

a) Quick speech development and understanding of language.

b) Development of team spirit.

c) Social development and integration.

d) Good followership qualities are developed.

e) Getting to know how to receive information.

f) Social development and integration.

Disruptive or Negative Influence of Peer Grouping

a) Negative influence of telling lies.

b) Pilfering or stealing.

c) Engaging in drug use and abuse.

d) Smoking of dangerous substances.

e) Sexual immorality.

f) Examination malpractice.
