Another mistake: Final

Tonia's heart was raising as the driver fired the engine, they were about 10 minutes away from the scene when she ordered the driver to stop.

He pulled over and she started pacing around the car, a lot was running through her mind. Missing the lawyer's appointment might make her lose one of her biggest properties in the States and she would never forgive herself to let the stranger they hit earlier bleed to death, that's if he wasn't dead yet. She wasn't sure if someone spotted the incident, she was scared to return since jungle justice was the trend.

She finally made her decision as she returned into the car, take me back there she told the driver. He wasn't okay with her decision and tried to talk her out of it but it made her angry, the driver left the car and walked away. Tonia took up the task of driving herself for the first time in Nigeria, she drove in the state but wasn't familiar with Nigeria road and that's what led to having a driver.

She drove back to the scene, she was shocked to see people snapping pictures instead of helping the lifeless body. She pulled over and pretended not to know what happened, she rushed into the crowd that surrounded the body. She showed her identity card as she knelt to check if he was still alive, his pulse was weak but she could feel him breathing slowly. He was murmuring words, so she moved to hear what he was saying. Fred was praying for forgiveness before he gave up a ghost.

She begged the passersby to help her lift the body but they moved further away from the scene, some good samaritan finally helped and she drove off to the nearest hospital. The bleeding was stopped and his condition became stable, she eventually requested for transferring the patient to her hospital which was granted.

Her staffs were surprised to see her return in an ambulance, Fred was transported on a stretcher into the hospital.

He was placed in a special ward and she demanded a series of tests. In the end, they discovered that he had lost his memories after he gained consciousness, it became a problem to get any information about him.

She went to the station with pictures of the incident and made it clear that the accident victim would remain at the hospital until someone show up for him. Days and weeks passed, no one came for him, the people who called only gave his name but didn't know his family. Fred began to learn in the hospital and Tonia became fond of him, they keep trying everything to help him recover his memory which didn't work out.

Three months after the incident, Tonia asked if Fred was going to move in with her family so he could see beyond the hospital environment which he agreed. She thought of taking him home because she would be traveling to the States, her lawyer was able to handle things without her but she has to travel during that period. She took him to her parents and they agreed that he could stay until he recovered fully, Tonia felt relieved since interacting with people would do him lots of good.

She immediately started preparing for her traveling, she decided to take Fred along with him so she could show him where the accident occurred probably it might trigger him to remember something. They went but nothing happened, Tonia's sibling dropped her at the airport and drove back home with Fred.

Months passed, Tonia returned and there was no improvement. Without wasting time, she enrolled him in a special adult school and Fred was quick to learn. Christmas came and Tonia bought jewelry for the family, she got Fred a gold necklace as a gift and that changed things.

Fred had a flash in his head as Tonia was trying to help him put the necklace around his neck, he turned sharply. It was as if something sting him, Tonia quickly moved backward. Before she would say anything, he said "I have a necklace, I usually carry around. My mother's picture is in it and he went silent". Tonia asked if he could remember anything else but he couldn't, she couldn't remember if there was a necklace so she went to the hospital to check his file. It wasn't stated that a necklace was taken from him, she drove herself to the first hospital that treated him to find out if they got any neck chain from him. Surprisingly they did and Tonia didn't believe the picture she saw on the pendant.

It was the picture she took with the family while receiving the money in exchange for her son more than 20 years ago, they cut out her face to make the pendant so that Fred can identify his mom if by chance their paths cross.

She couldn't concentrate driving back, she was rushing home when she crashed into a truck parked by the roadside. It was her first time driving at night, the vehicle was dismantled before they could get to her body. Luckily for her, she regained consciousness while being transported in an ambulance.

She didn't believe that she wasn't dead, how did I escape death? She asked the rescue team.

Her family was contacted and Fred was in tears all through the journey to the hospital, it seems he had another flash. He couldn't figure out why Tonia looked like the image in the pendant he was talking about.

Tonia was good except for some bruises she got from the airbag, Fred hugged her immediately they arrived at her ward. She thought he has regained his memory and she went on her knees begging for forgiveness but Fred and the other family members didn't understand, Fred regained his senses fully while hearing the story of how he was given in exchange for money.

"You are the heartless mother who traded me for money", Fred shouted as he pushed her away. Her family were completely lost because she never mentioned it to them. Tonia burst into tears as the narrated what shame she would have brought to the family being the first child, she went begging and told him how much she regretted her action.

It was an emotional one for the whole family, everyone joined Tonia in begging Fred. He couldn't say no to their plea, especially his grandparents who didn't treat him like a stranger.

They left the hospital and continued with the discussion, it was an unforgettable Christmas for the family. Things were settled and Tonia returned to the states with Fred where he returned to school and graduated as a doctor as well, Tonia retired at 50 and handed over all her wealth to Fred, it ended happily for everyone.
