Teaching is a profession. Also, a vocation.
Amidst this pandemic, one of the professions that took a great hit was the teaching profession.
We, as a society, always say that we value the educators and that we recognize them as those who guide the upcoming generations, those who guide the future. Unlike lawyers, doctors, etc., We celebrate Teacher's day. We set a day to give importance to the people who take up the profession but do we really appreciate them as we think we do?
In my senior years, I was the first in my class when it comes to Mathematics so I was pushed to take up engineering, those who are skilled in computers were advised to take up IT, some were recommended to take up social work, medicine, accountancy but the phrases "You're good in Math, why don't you become a Math Teacher?", "You write wonderful essays, be a language teacher" and similar words couldn't be heard.
Filipinos have a shallow appreciation for the teaching profession. Mainly because of the low pay, and tedious work. Professions that doesn't make big money are shunned by most Filipinos.
In this time of pandemic, may we take this period to change our perceptions and try to support the people who continue to secure the future of our country.
