Peace can be categorized into two (2) types;
Negative Peace and Positive Peace
The concept of negative peace addresses immediate symptoms, the conditions of war, and the use and effects of force and weapons. Negative peace is the absence of direct violence (physical, verbal, and psychological) between individuals, groups, and governments.
Positive Peace is more than the absence of violence; it is the presence of social justice through equal opportunity, a fair distribution of power and resources, equal protection and impartial enforcement of law. Positive Peace can be established through world order by supporting international law, compliance with multilateral treaties, use of international courts, and nonviolent resolution of disputes, participation in international organizations, trade, and communication.
Ways of Promoting Peace
1. Introspection: Going inward is the true way to promote outer peace, meditation and being in alignment with one's true self will build a solid foundation for peacefulness in your life. Sit in silence and breathe and notice what you become aware of. Your inner voice will guide you in life. Take some time for journaling to really understand the peaceful life you are meant to be living.
2. Compassion: There can be no peace without a deep level of compassion for all beings. Note the difference between being compassionate and taking pity. Feeling compassion means you have an understanding for others, and wish suffering to no being.
3. Broaden Your Understanding of Peace: You are free to choose your own path. Living in peace will be your own conscious, daily action founded on your striving and understandings, gleaned from all corners of the world, from all people you have ever met and known, and from your own consciousness and knowledge.
4. Tolerance; Tolerance in all that you think and do will make a difference in your life and in the lives of others around you. Tolerance for others is about appreciating diversity, the plurality of modern society, and being willing to live and let others live too. When we fail to tolerate others' beliefs, ways of being, and opinions, the end result can br discrimination, repression, dehumanization, and ultimately violence. Practicing tolerance is at the heart of living peacefully.
5. Forgiveness: Holding anger and resentment towards those who have hurt you will only lead to more heartache. Strive to forgive and let go . Everything in life comes to us as some lesson to be learned. Be open to new possibilities.
Peace is especially important in today's world because it makes a better environment for the next generation. Peace also makes life on earth worth living. Peace is important for social well being where people live in harmony.
