Suggestion about Read.cash communities - Same subject Communities merging

14 95

Hey folks,

I just wanted to share some thoughs and suggestion about communities.

They are becoming an important part of Read.Cash life. I think these update are really cool and really improve users experience, on quality of the content and reward a normal user can gain.

Also, I would like to share a suggestion that I think it could be implemented.

There are many communities that have the same name and the same object.

By exemple, there are more or less 3 communities about Photography :

Both are featured, and content are almost the same.

I am moderating (a7a0) and quite sad about the submission of communities. Each post is low quality, just life blogging or plagiarism.

I thought moderating a Photography community could develop it and improve quality of article, as "how to take good picture"," what devices do you use" "how setting up focals" etc...

I also tried so post my own article to show what is intended in the community, but nobody follow these rules.

So my suggestion, what is also a question, is : is it possible to fusion same communities subject like my example, by merging moderators too.

If it is not possible, should we see only one subject community be featured and the others no ?

Otherwise I think I will abandon my community. There are other on the same subject and there is a lack a real photographers on Read.Cash.

Morever, I don't want to see Read.Cash as a bad instagram.

@Read.Cash Thanks for answering my question and explain me how to abandon a community despite it is featured.

P.S. : same problem with Crypto-news communities, numerous exist, none are featured but I think it could be a relevant community on Read.Cash (if there are good authors like we can see on Publish0x).

You may excuse me, but that was an extraordinarily bad idea. One of the main points with communities is that it should be possible to have same topic communities with slightly different profile. That's why you have a code after the name. It is prepared even for having the same name communities.

It's another matter if two communities want to be merged. But not allowing more than one community for each topic, or one featured community for each topic, is a thoroughly bad idea.

Then, with just one community per article, these same topic communities will become more different, and that is good. It serves no purpose if every post is in all the communities so they all become the same.

No no, i think it's fairly okay to do so if the possibility of read.cash only allowing one submission per community were to happen. While it's true that the idea of the communities was to allow users to choose but still though, merging groups seems fine to avoid all the spam and stuff and to kind of help clean up the submissions a bit. I don't know about how it works for moderators, of course but i neater and more specific guideline will come out of those mergers too if it were too happen and i think that would help the writers who actually follow the guidelines out a lot

I cannot see that merging communities would diminish spam or clean up anything. On the contrary, it would be impossible for moderators to check everything carefully if communities become too large with too many submissions to the same community.

I understand your view on this point. I am totally agreeing with the fact that one subject could be possible with very different profile : you just have to listen love song, they are all about love but no ones are same.

But I am disagreeing with you when you say it is an "extraordinary bad idea". My though is that let 3 communities named "Photography" with, in each mostly the same article is an extraordinary bad idea, because it takes 3x more place on Read.cash frontpage and make searching original articles harder.

So, in this case, I am still thinking merging these communities will delete same article in multiple communities.

Until we could find multiple communities on same subject but with different kind of submission I can't totally agree with you.

Many thanks for sharing your view with me.

I am still interested by @Read.cash view on this.

When the principle one community per article is in effect, they will have different kind of submissions. But it is possible that in the case of photography, there is not material enough for three different communities, but then one or two have to close, due to lack of sufficient high quality material. It is analogous to the law of supply and demand. Or they can choose to merge with one another. But trying to reach that by implementing a rule in that respect, enforcing them to merge, that is something else. I will never support that.

Okay, thanks for developing your view and debating.

I was not expecting to enforce the merge, but allow this merging to moderators of each communities who agree with that as an option.

Now Read.cash answered to my question, there is no more difficulties to me (and you don't have to support my suggestion ;) ).

Then what about merging the communities as well as moderators?? To moderate the items well these moderators from the merged communities can still moderate the one chosen thereby lessening the work

Here's why we did it the way we did it :) There is a subreddit named Bitcoin at http://reddit.com/r/bitcoin, the problem is that it is occupied by people who want to keep Bitcoin the way it is and not discuss any potential improvements. They will ban you for trying to discuss certain topics, like a block size increase. They also have their own commercial interests and promote own unrelated products, while banning everyone else who starts to promote their own product. Basically, a in subreddit named Bitcoin you can't discuss a lot of things about Bitcoin. That's the situation we want to avoid.

That's why there are codes, so that if the first guy who took Photography isn't really a great photographer - he won't occupy the name forever.

@Mictorrani is right here that when we will start allowing an article to be only in one community a lot of low-quality communities will fade away.

Photographers will naturally flock to the communities that offer greater value. But somebody with even better offer can still create a new Photography community and have a fair chance to get her share.

Many thanks for your quick and thorough answer.

I understand how you did it better : let community do moderation, select by users activity and good moderation select good content and repeat that until low quality community die, and high quality communities continue to develop.

It is Darwinism used in Read.cash blogging as a free market.

I am quite confident about that will work, but in how many time ?

And if low quality users an content win this war ? You will, like you do, change points rules system to help "good communities" in your view.

Time will say if you were right, and I am confident about your good work.

P.S. : I had forgotten the implementation of "one submission by article" rule ; so making me remember it answered to my question haha

It doesn't make sense to post bad content and win. First of all, if you get your community featured - you might some of points each day for crappy submissions (<5% of total points, community limit), but if we notice that - your community is going to be "un-featured" in less than a week. So it's hard to me to imagine how low quality content can win this game :)

Thanks again to be easily accessible as you are ; it seems that you really thought about any possibility to abuse of the point system.

Moderators are encouraged to be make real selecting of submission if they want to be well rewarded.

You can delete from your mind my suggestion, it doesn't make sense with future changing.

Can't wait to see how community will change with these news features.

By the time the submission of articles is limited to only one community, the multiple communities bearing the same name with the same objectives will be forced to pave way for the best among them. I expect a lot of landslides towards a better read.cash.
