The "Lady of the Night" is an epiphyte plant of the cactus family, it has no thorns and its stem resembles elongated and flat leaves with irregular edges, very soft, bright green. This plant is considered as a shrub, it can reach up to 5 meters high, its natural habitat is the tropical rainforests, it grows in epiphyte form on the stems of other trees and can adapt very well as an ornamental plant in gardens.

The scientific name is Epiphyllum oxypetalum, its common names are: Galan by Night (El Salvador and Guatemala), Dance Flower (Colombia), Queen of the Night, Lady of the Night (Argentina and Venezuela), Beauty under the moon (Gekka Bijin Japon), Flower of Heaven (Kadupul Sir Lanka), Brahma Kamalam (India).

This plant when it blooms impregnates a fragrance that spreads all over the place, its flower is intense white reaching up to 25 cm in its natural state, its flowering begins approximately at 7 pm very slowly, opening in all its splendor at midnight. The next day its flowers are closed giving the impression of a cocoon, not to reopen.

This plant is native to America, according to reports it comes from Bolivia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Colombia, Mexico, Paraguay and Venezuela, but it has also been found in India, Japan and Vietnam, who have a different legend about its origin.

Legends of the origin of the Lady of the Night

Vietnam.

Where a maiden fell in love with a gladiator, so she did not have his same rank. They were meeting in secret until the maiden's father found out. The next act was to lock up the gladiator, the maiden managed to discover the place where he was locked up, so she bribed the guards to be able to visit him at midnight. When her father found out about these nocturnal visits, he gave the order to take the gladiator's life, the maiden was very sad and disconsolate, unable to overcome her pain for that whole year, taking her own life the same day of the gladiator's death.

This monarch blamed himself for the death of his daughter, wept disconsolately over her grave, and one day a strange flower appeared that had a unique fragrance. The monarch named her lady of the night, which bloomed on the anniversary of the death of both. It is said that some people saw the monarch talking to two people when he was alone in his room. In many parts of the world some people claimed to have seen the maiden when the plant blooms, I have not seen it yet and I hope not to see it either, hehe.

India

As you know in India it is called Brahma Kamalam, this is done to honor the Hindu god of creation, Lord Brahma. According to the legend while opening the flower, praying and making wishes to the God, these wishes will be fulfilled.

There are other stories of the origin of the Lady of the Night, such as the Legend of the Magical Flower, Bunga Bakawali. the legendary flower of the Celestial Nagas, you can read it in this link: Tutunamituna.

Thank you for making it this far, I hope you enjoyed it.
