People have used different terms for self control, such as; discipline, determination,grit,fortitude and will power.
Self control can be defined as the ability to regulate ones behaviour in the face of temptations and impulses.self control is a cognitive process that is necessary for regulating one's behaviour in order to achieve specific goals.
It is the ability to manage your actions, feelings and emotions in order to respond appropriately to an issue.
That takes us to the types if self control;
Impulse control:we should always stop and think through, the consequences outcome and results before acting.
Emotional control:we should learn to control our emotions at all times,it helps us to respond rightly to upsetting or unexpected things that happen around us.
Movement control: we should always control our body movement at all times.Helps regulate what we do physically so it appears appropriate.
We should always learn to discipline ourselves because it plays a major role in self control, only discipline helps one know what to do at a particular time and in the right manner and discipline also gives us the inner strength to control ourselves, actions and emotions.
A self controlled person tend to live healthier and better than those without self control
For instance a self controlled student will have good grades and performances in their classes because they are disciplined and also in an organization a self controlled personnel tends to work hard to expand, improve and grow the business.
Qualities of a self controlled person are;
1)Control his/her thoughts
2) control his/her temper
3) control his/her fear
4) control his/her speech
5) control his/her habits
6) control his/her actions
Self control helps to manage motivational conflicts.
Note: Before we take any step or decision we should always think of the repercussion, result and consequences because impatience and lack of self contained can cause damage and mistakes.
Most times hunger and stress contribute greatly to non self control because it makes the brain un-relax and any thing that comes up stirs up our anger. So it is advisable not to overwork or stress oneself because people tend to starve themselves in the name of dieting.Proper exercise is also important for proper self conduct.
Importance of self control:
1) individual well-being;self control leads to better health, it relates to lower anxiety and depression,Mental health problems such as substance use and suicide are less common among Self controlled people.
2) Relationship; Beyond wealth,or good looks, people want self controlled relationship partners.they want someone who they can trust, who can behave his/herself properly at the right time because they are bound to spend their lives together, they need someone who can understand them and who they can cope with.self controlled persons forgive and react to conflicts with benevolence rather than violence.
3) Societies;it helps in the growth and development of the society he/she belongs to,the society flourishes because it has self controlled people.
In conclusion let's develop the attitude of controlling ourselves at any point in time because it pays to control your self even when offended by someone, we should control our anger as not to make rash decisions.
