French Toast?

I had always been a bad cook. Always messing up my cooking, but nevertheless, I try, even if that means having to eat bad tasting food.

My sister on the other hand, seems to have mastered the art of cooking. She always manages to make delicious food, fortunately.

One time when I was maybe 16 or 17 years old, we visited our aunt from another Province and stayed there for about a month. My sister had the idea of cooking french toast, something I never had before and didn't know of until then. So we went to the market and bought the ingredients. She explained that it is made by dipping sliced bread on a mixture of eggs and milk and frying it on a pan. To me, it was pretty weird, but it sounded like pancakes so I assisted her while she did the cooking and after a few minutes, it was ready. I must say, it was not much like pancakes. I was blown away with how good it tasted and how good a cook she was. We finished it in a matter of seconds because ae shared with our aunt which was also delighted and even asked if there was more but iyyiunfortunately, we already ate it all up. It was an instant favorite and I long to have some more.

Fast forward to today, after so many long years, just this morning, I tried to make it using the "knowledge" of the recipe my sister shared years ago. Eggs, bread and milk was all I can remember. I didn't look it up on Google nor asked her about it. I just cooked. And remembered when I mention I wasn't a good cook? Well guess what, I am right. While it was still kinda edible, my tummy is just acting weird after having a couple of bites. While I was cooking it, I thought it was missing something so I put a generous amount of salt before frying it on a pan with margarine and oil. It's definitely a bad idea. Now there's a still a few pieces left good thing I only did four slices of bread or I would have to deal with so much food waste if I did the whole pack of bread.

Wow. I really am a bad cook. Is it my taste buds? No, because I know what tastes good and what's not. Is it me not following instructions and correct measurements? Definitely! Lesson learned? Hmm... yeah? Well, I learned my lesson but I probably won't be able to measure ingredients because we don't have measuring tools, we just eyeball the ingredients and wait for our ancestors to pat is in the back and tell us it's enough, or maybe I just won't cook anymore.
