It is estimated by the World Health Organization that about 1 million people die from suicide each year. What drives too many people to take a life of their own? It's difficult for those who are not in the grips of suicidal depression and desperation to grasp what drives so many people to take their own lives. But there is so much suffering for a suicidal person that they can see no other way.
Suicide is a desperate effort that has become unbearable to avoid pain. Blinded by feelings of self-loathing, hopelessness and loneliness, even by death, a suicidal person does not see any way of seeking relief. But despite their urge to stop the suffering, most suicidal individuals are profoundly conflicted with ending their own lives. They wish there was a suicide solution, but they just can't see one.
Warning signs of suicide
Many suicidal people send warning signs of their thoughts or signals. Recognizing these warning signs and knowing how to act if you spot them is the best way to avoid suicide. If you suspect that a friend or family member is suicidal, by pointing out the options, demonstrating that you care, and having a doctor or psychologist involved, you may play a part in suicide prevention.
Significant suicide warning signs include talking about killing or hurting oneself, talking or writing a lot about death or dying, and looking for items, such as guns and narcotics, that could be used in a suicide attempt. If the person has a mood disorder such as depression or bipolar disorder, suffers from alcohol dependency, has previously attempted suicide, or has a family history of suicide, these signs are much more harmful.
Hopelessness is a more subtle, but equally deadly, warning sign of suicide. Studies also found that a significant indicator of suicide is hopelessness. People who feel hopeless can talk about feelings that are "unbearable," expect a gloomy future, and state that they have little to look forward to.
Dramatic mood swings or abrupt shifts in personality, such as moving from outgoing to withdrawn or from well-behaved to defiant, provide other warning signs that lead to a suicidal mind frame. A suicidal person can often lose interest, neglect their appearance, or display major changes in their eating or sleeping habits in day-to-day activities.
