Morals of today

One morning in April 1999, the slack was broken in the town of Littleton near Denver, Colorado, United States. Two young men in black coats entered the local high school and started shooting at students and teachers. They also detonated bombs. Twelve students and one teacher died and more than 20 were injured. The perpetrators ended the massacre with suicide. They were only 17 and 18 years old and had a deep hatred of certain groups.

SAD, the example mentioned above is not an isolated case. Newspapers, radio and television report similar events around the world. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, around 11,000 violent incidents involving weapons were reported in American schools in 1997. In Hamburg, reports of violence increased by 10% in 1997 and 44% of suspects were young people under the age of 21. .

Corruption between politicians and officials is widespread. A 1998 report by European Union (EU) Commissioner Anita Gradin found that the cost of corruption in the EU in 1997 was estimated at $ 1.4 billion. This included everything from rejecting parking tickets to fraudulently receiving farm subsidies or other EU subsidies. Large-scale money laundering and smuggling of weapons and drugs were authorized, and EU workers were bribed by criminal organizations to keep silent. The entire European Commission resigned in 1999.

However, it is not just the highest levels of society who are cheating. A report by the European Commission on illegal workers found that up to 16% of the EU's gross domestic product consists of revenues from registered and non-taxable companies. In Russia, illegal income is believed to be up to 50% of total income. In addition, the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners in the United States announced that American companies lose well over $ 400 billion annually to employee theft of money or assets.

The internet has been used by many pedophiles seeking to attract children and minors to illegal sexual activities. According to a Swedish spokesman for Save the Children, concerns about child pornography on the Internet are growing. In Norway in 1997, this organization received 1,883 tips about child pornography sites on the Internet. The following year the number of such councils rose to nearly 5,000. Much of the material is produced in countries where governments or local authorities cannot control this hideous activity.

Has it been better in the past?

Many people horrified by the bad morals in the world today may be jealous of the community spirit of their parent or grandparent's day. You may have heard that people at that time were living much calmer lives and that honesty and other aspects of morality were valued at all levels of society. Older people may have talked about the days when hardworking people help one another, family ties are strong, and young people feel safe and supported on their parents' farm or workshop.

This leads to questions: Was people's morale really better in the past? Or is there just a sense of nostalgia that distorts our memories of days gone by?
