It is said that true confidence does not let any room for envy, therefore you should always feel sorry for those who are blinded by it, because they are not satisfied with their existence at all. Here are some facts about envy that will most likely help you avoid this toxic feeling :

  • Usually when someone is envious of you it means that they desire something you own, something they cannot obtain. Do not mistake envy with admiration. Even though they might seem similar at first glance, the foundation of these two are totally different: envy is based on negativity, while admiring is a delightful and inspiring feeling.

  • Envy tends to be directed towards people you compare yourself too, whom you feel in competition with so in case you ever get to feel that, just know that you are most likely perceiving them as superior.

  • There are also a couple of other toxic feelings that can be manifested because of envy, such as irony, narcissism and snobbery.

  • You envy what others have but you wouldn't be willing to work as much as them to get those things. You just want them because they have them and you don't.

  • This feeling could be a result of childhood trauma, such as differences made by parents between children, where one child is the younger one and requires more attention or special treatment and the other one who is the oldest and secretly desires what the younger one receives but is not able to express that feeling, because of the fear of being judged. This kind of situation often leads to long term problems of envy. Also children who come from poor families might occur this problem at both young and adult ages.

  • Envy could potentially twist your mind into thinking that you have to harm others in order to become superior to them so be careful about what you are feeding your mind and seek professional help if things go too far.

  • Social media is actually one of the main reasons why people have started to feel insecure and envious of others, since its known for being the place where everybody is posing happy, rich and accomplished.

  • Researchers have said that this feeling starts to lose its intensity once you reach the age of 30 and it's most present during teenage years, when your personality is still in development.

These are only a few of the many facts related to envy and what it can do to your life. You need to learn how to recognize this feeling, once its present, and also when to seek for help. And if you are trying to avoid it.. just learn how to love yourself. It might take a while but it's worth it. Coming from an ex envious person.
