Nightingale was born on May 12,1820, in Florenc, Italy, the city which inspired her name. She was a part of a wealthy family. Her father was a landowner. Nightingale eventually enrolledas a nursing student in 1850 at the Institution of Protestant Deaconess in Kaiserwerth Germany. In the early 1850s, she returned to London, where she took a nursing job in Harley Streer Hospital for ailing governesse.

In 1853, she went to Turkey with a group of 38 nurses to work for the sick British soilders during the Crimean War. She worked day and night to help the wonded soilders. The soilders, who were both moved and comforted by her endless supply of compassion, took to callingher "the Lady with the Lamp. Others simply called her " the Angle of the Crimea".Her work reduced the hospital's death rate by two-thirds.

In 1860, she funded the established of St. Thomas' Hospita, and within it, the Nightingale Training School for Nurses. She become a figure of public admiration. She died in 13 August 1910..
