The academy awards or Oscars are the most famous of all film awards. They have been presented since 1929. The awards are voted for by the USA acedemy of motion picture arts, & science, which has more than 5,500 members, including previous norminees in each 24 categories (apart from special, honorary and technical awards) then select the winners.
The awards is a gold plated statuette, which stands 34.3cm high and weighs 3.8kg. according to the legend, academy librarian Margaret Herrick named the statuette Oscar because she thought it look like her uncle oscar! Main categories include, best supporting actor and best supporting actress. As soundtrack, documentary, foreign film and so on.
Most wins
These three films have each won 11 Oscars, including best picture : ben-hur (1959), Titanic (1997) and the Lord of rings: return of the King (2003).
A no-win situation
The turning point (1997) and the color purple (1985) had 11 nominations each but didn't win a single Oscar. Gangs of New York (2002) received 10 nominations without a win. Cabaret (1972) is the only film to win eight Oscar without having winning best picture .
Long and short
Gone with the wind (1960) was the longest film to win best picture. The apartment (1960) and Schindler's List (1993) are the only black and white films to have won since then.
One and only
Keisha castle-hughes is the only actress to be nominated for an Oscar in the best actress category before her 14th birthday. Keisha was 13 when she was nominated even younger, 11, when she acted the film, despite having no previous experience. She then took the role of queen apailana of naboo in star wars: episode 3 III - revenge of the sith.
Highest paid actress in 2006 Reese Witherspoon won the best actress Oscar for walk the line. She also signed a contract for a record - breaking $29 million to the star in our family trouble (2007). Previously Julia Roberts held the record for the highest paid to an actress, when she was paid $24 million for her role in Mona Lisa smile (2003). The top earning a dress are Cameron diaz who earned $17.5 million to star in Bewitched, and the same again for the interpreter (both 2005) and Jennifer lopez who took home $15 million for her role in monster in law (2005).
Those who get it are really very lucky and honoured also. In fact every artist ran behind it during his whole life time. But it is given a certain amount of artist. So one have to work very hard for achieve this. And one have also be luckiest to gain Oscar.
