Nigerian Pastor Loans Nine Billionaire Naira From Bank To Build His Church
So just yesterday reports started circulating concerning a loan of ₦9 billion given by Wema Bank to the Global Citadel Community Church owned by Pastor Tunde Bakare in Oregun, Lagos State.
According to multiple media sources, wemabank is currently making efforts to recover the loan given to the pastor to build his church. This happens to be a 5000 seat auditorium including a library and food court among other things built.
Pastor Tunde Bakare is a Nigerian pastor who was famously arrested in March 2002 for his very critical preachings and sermons against the president of Nigeria (Olusegun Obasanjo) at that time. He also ran for the post of vice president in 2011 presidential election along side with Buhari running for the presidential seat which they both lost. He was at a time a pastor at the Deeper Life Bible church then he moved on to the Redeemed Christian Church of God. After that, he left to form his own church.
Media sources say the bank has initiated moves to get the loan repaid after the exit of its former Managing Director, Segun Olekutoyi who is said to be a close friend of Tunde Bakare. The loan which was initially ₦4.5 billion had an accumulated interest and is now at ₦9 billion which has made it very difficult for the church to repay.
Some sources have claimed that the Covid-19 nationwide lockdown that happened last year was a major factor that affected the loan repayments by the church as there were restrictions to large gatherings and it lasted for several weeks.
Although there is no official statement from both parties about the development but social media is engrossed with the development of this news.
The controversial clergyman has been involved in some shady incidents over the past years, at a time he prophesied that Olusegun Obasanjo would not be the President of Nigeria in 2003 but yet opposite was the case.
He was also criticized for claiming in a sermon in 2006, that Muhammadu Buhari would be a bad leader for Nigeria and yet he accepted the offer to be Buhari's vice-presidential candidate in the 2011 presidential elections.
It will be interesting to see how this latest story develops in the coming days and the possible controversy that could erupt from this case. I personally will follow up on this story.
Now he borrowed money in hopes that the members will be the ones to pay. Why not go through the normal path like every other pastor and do alter calls to build the church gradually until you're done.
Well this pastor was just an example, pastors everywhere uses members to enrich themselves in Nigeria. Expecially the fake ones. It's always linking from one alter call or vow to another.
