'Encanto' is a Disney film filled with charming visuals and lackluster songs.
Encanto is the latest animated Disney musical that tells the story of the Madrigal family, whose members are tucked away in the mountains of Colombia. The film is stuffed with characters who wield magical powers and perform lavish musical numbers written by Lin-Manuel Miranda. But for all its magical realism, it's also a fairly simple story about a family whose bonds need healing.
Disneyâs âEncantoâ has a simple but powerful message: Itâs not what you do, but who you are that counts
âEncantoâ tells the story of the extended Madrigal family which includes the heroine Mirabel (voice of Stephanie Beatriz), her cousins Antonio (Ravi Cabot-Conyers), Camilo (Rhenzy Feliz) and Dolores (Adassa). Her Uncle FĂ©lix (Mauro Castillo) and Aunt Pepa (Carolina Gaitan), her grandmother Abuela Alma (MarĂa Cecilia Botero), her mother Julieta (Angie Cepeda), her father AgustĂn (Wilmer Valderrama), and her sisters Luisa (Jessica Darrow) and Isabela (Diane Guererro).
Many years ago when her grandmother (voice of MarĂa Cecilia Botero) was forced to flee her home with infant triplets, she was âgranted a miracle,â though by whom and why is never explained. First part of that miracle? A magical house, high in the mountains of Colombia, that is almost a living organism. Second: Every member of the Madrigal family â not including in-laws â is given a special ability as a child. Mirabelâs mother (Angie Cepeda) can heal injury and sickness with her cooking. Aunt Pepa (Carolina Gaitan) controls the weather via her emotions. One sister has super-strength, while another is effortlessly graceful, gorgeous and can summon flowers from thin air. But Mirabel (Stephanie Beatriz) has no gift.
Her grandmother reminds her of this often.
When the houseâs foundations start to crack, and her relativesâ gifts begin dimming and disappearing. Mirabel decides to track down the problem. What follows is delightfully complicated, itâs a quest in which our heroine never leaves home, and the enemy â if there is one â isnât who youâd expect. Even though the story lacks logic at some points, when you remember that the whole story started with an unexplained miracle, itâs easy enough to let it slide. The characters deepen marvelously as the story goes on, and it becomes clearer that the blessings received as children have now become burdens. If you can manipulate the weather, for example, thereâs a lot of pressure to keep things sunny. The filmâs overarching message is people are worthy of love because of who they are, not what they do. It is simple yet powerful.
Anyone who has ever felt left out by their family will see themselves in Mirabel. (Frankly, anyone who has a family will recognize â or identify with â someone in this movie.) While Mirabel is at the center of âEncanto,â the story is really about the Madrigals as a whole.

I was privileged to watch it in the cinema. The concept of the storyline doesn't totally add up but then again it was nice. There are alot of catchy musics in it too, can't wait for the streaming release so I can watch it to my heart's content. If you haven't watched it before just save the date (Dec 24th 2021) and have fun while watching it. I promise it'll ease alot of stress.
